Hello everyone, glad to make your acquaintance! I started vaping about 4 months ago on an MVP 2.0 with a Nautilus, and after about two months updated to a 150w sigelei with both a subtank and a subtank mini. I just got into RDA'S with a Dark Horse, and have successfully build coils for it that have provided me with a good vape, but not an overly satisfying one... To all you experts out there, what would be a good build for a dark horse, or similar RDA that would provide lots of vapor? Its a 3 post RDA, and if you can keep the gauge at either 28 or 26, that would be perfect! Also, I have looked into twisted multi-strand coils, but worry that the kanthal will eventually untwist itself due to heat. Any info would be appreciated everyone!

Hi. Nice setup!

May I recommend my setup? Given that you know what you are doing and all that blah blah blah:

• 28 gauge, six wrap, 2 mm, horizontal Quad Coils, 0.16 ohms

• Use Japanese Cotton. Experiment with the thickness of the cotton you use. I have found that wicking it right can mean the difference between a lot of vapor and chucking the vapor. Subjectively speaking, the cotton should move freely in the coil with a little bit of noticeable resistance.

You could go hotter with lower ohms, but I don't go below 0.16 with my battery.

This is what I currently have in my Dark Horse. I don't use 26 or 28 gauge though. Usually 24. The pictured build that I'm currently using is 22 though.

+1 for what @dc99 said!:)

The beauty of a high vv/vw mod is that you don't have to build low sub-ohm coils to get a great vape. In fact, building low sub-ohm works against you. Higher ohm coils use more wire which means more surface area to vaporize juice. That increases vapor production.

With a mechanical mod you increase the warmth of your coil by building lower ohm coils. However, the electronics in a regulated mod boosts the power coming from the battery so the ohms of the coil no longer control the warmth.

Here's a good thread on the subject: My thoughts about sub-ohm and latest VV/VW devices...

Thank you guys, this is why I love the ECF community. I will try the twisted kanthal as well as other set ups provided by you guys. I will come back with the results. I mostly worry about having a build that is usable for every day vaping. I understand cloud chasing can come with the sacrifice of flavor or durability of coils/batteries. That is one of the reasons I was hesitating on using twisted kanthal coils, as I'm not yet too familiar with them.

I love my dark horse. My current build is with twisted 28k kanthal - coils last for weeks so far - I would not worry about them untwisting. I have a Lemo 2 tank that I use in tandem so re-wicking once a week works for me, then burn the coils clean.

I made both 3mm diameter coils with 7 winds each. Result is 0.6 ohm and I vape with my iStick 50W on 20-25Watts.
