PC question

On Firefox on my Dad's computer, when you go to g-mail, all the little boxes that should have refresh symbols or arrows or say "more" with a drop-down are blank. You can hover over them to see what the blanks are (but I'll never manage to teach Dad to do that and he probably couldn't read that small print if he did.)

If I switch to Chrome, it works fine but, even though I could copy all his toolbar shortcuts, but the idea of another browser threw him.

Because it works on one but not the other, I assume it's not a computer-wide program upgrade such as Java, but probably an add-on or something that isn't working with Firefox's 99 thousandth upgrade. Any guesses as to which one?
