I couldn't help feeling terrible for the musk ox or whatever it was.

I’m going with African Buffalo, definitely not a musk ox, they live in the arctic. While the picture might have been taken during arctic summer, I can tell you after having lived 250 miles north of the arctic circle for 8 years there are no lions in the arctic. I saw musk ox quite often among other animals but never saw a lion. :)
