a mechanical mod is nothing more than a tube with a battery
a regulated mod has electronics in it that give you the variable voltages/wattages and other things

toppers are tanks and they can be used on any type of battery whether it be a cig-look-a-like, ego style batteries, mechanical mods or regulated mods.....typically there are 2 types of tanks 510 connections or ego connections....

[edit] this may help
Size Does Matter
For those out there with the "size problem"
Here is something to give a good judgement

very far left....telescoping mech mod is a mechanical mod (tube and battery) whereas the TECs is a regulated mod (offers vv/vw/puff count/ohms check/battery protection)
you place whatever type tank you want ontop of these so long as the tank or mod both takes 510 or ego threading
another pic of my techs only with a hypertank instead of a protank as the above one has

What exactly is a mechanical mod?

I know this is short but its intended to not influence the answer.

I can has tapatalked this.

A mechanical mod is a battery holder with no wires or electronics.

But ive seen mech mods that seemed like only toppers.. ie worked on non mech bases.

I can has tapatalked this.

"Mechanical mods" refers to the PV ONLY not the toppers. There are "Hybrid mods" that include a mechanical mod AND a topper built as one unit. They can't be taken apart and used seperately.

So the ak mod that looks like a topper only is not that.. its the base too eh?

I can has tapatalked this.

post a link for this 'ak mod' so we can see what you are talking about.

a mech mod is a tube for a battery and has no electronics; this is to distinguish it from a regulated mod, which includes circuitry with stuff like vv, vw, short circuit protection, auto cutoff and maybe some other fancy stuff.

They whole idea of a mech mod is simplicity, with very little that can 'go wrong' in terms of being capable of doing the job.

A mechanical mod is a device which holds a battery, has a switch with mechanical parts which when pressed moves a conductive contact to meet the negative contact of the battery, completing the circuit. The positive pole of the battery touches a contact which transfers power to the atomiser. There is no short circuit protection, no battery management and no power regulation, unless the user opts to install a small device called a Kick, which transforms the mech into a regulated VW device. The user could instead install a safety fuse, which would offer battery protection.

The mech mod typically has very little voltage drop, and delivers a far superior vape to most regulated mods. The user has to be very mindful of not over discharging their battery, which would be dangerous. The user also has to be very mindful of the electrical resistance of their atomiser, and use Ohms law to ensure that they don't exceed the maximum sustained current rating of their battery

Mech mods come in all shapes and sizes, but mostly mech mods are very much more beautiful than regulated mods

Without wanting to hijack the thread, can someone explain how you would install a safety fuse ?
TIA :)

i want to emphasize, that an unregulated mod only qualifies as full mech
if it has a mechanical button and no wiring or circuitry whatsoever.

Re: the fuse

If you are thinking about something like the 2-cent fuse... you just drop it in the mod, at the bottom of the battery compartment.
But beware to buy one that letss you go low enough for your preferred resistance.

Why no wires?

What's the difference between a mechanical switch and a button used with wires? (Provided the button is a standard open / close circuit button, and does not operate a relay, gate, or other electronic circuitry...)

Wires can break or burn out causing a short circuit.

True, but I'm asking why a wire makes or breaks the definition of a mech mod. After all, you can dent or otherwise break a mod without creating a short, etc. I understand that's not an easy thing to do, and would likely never happen; I'm just presenting it for the sake of argument.
