Hello All,

I've been using this DID clone for the past several weeks while waiting for my RSST to come in the mail. The juice just does not taste right to me and I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I am currently using 400 SS mesh and I've tried several prepping methods. So far the best thing that worked for me is roll while leaving a small hole in the center, quenched, juice burned, and pulsed my wire on it until it all glowed evenly. The bottom of the wick is angle cut and I am using a 4/5 wrap kanthal ribbon wire @ 1.3-1.4 ohms. I am vaping Boba's Bounty and Gorilla Juice. I have tried using the DID on both a mech and a Vamo.

On the mech the juice always tastes burnt. I am fairly certain that I don't have any hot spot issues. I've removed the cap and fired the mod and it is wicking great. I can even see beads of juice all over the wick as it sizzles away. So I thought at 1.3-1.4 ohms I am just running too many watts on it so I slapped it on my vamo. I tried running it as low as 5 watts on RMS mode and it just not produce much vapor. It starts to produce decent vapor at ~7 watts but the flavor is still weak. The best for me so far is ~8 watts but after that it starts to taste burnt.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong? Could it be the device itself? Could it be my juice? I am vaping the same juices side by side on a carto tank and I just can't get the same or better flavor like what I was expecting as I am getting from the carto tank.

Burnt Taste = Wicking or Hot Spot

If you are getting lots of vapor and burnt its probably a hot spot. Dump the tank, pull the wick and set it on fire to dry it out.

Drop the wick back in the DRY tank and pulse the coil again. It took my last build a few rebuilds to get it all dialed in but my AGA can now go through 6 mils in an evening like no ones business.

Curious to see how the Cody stacks up to it once it comes in.

Hi Tintreach,

Thanks. I dumped the tank and checked for hot spots. I was convinced that it was all going to glow even but when I checked my top coil did actually have a hot spot. I worked it out and got the coil glowing even again. Burnt taste gone. Now I just have a muted flavor. You think it may just be my taste buds accustomed to the carto or you think something else may be going on w/ my device?

Well, try to keep the wick at the bottom and tilt it up a bit. I can't see how much vape is coming off so I think it may be either a wicking issue or the wick needs to be broke in a bit.

Run a tank or 2 through it, play around with the air hole position if you can.

If it still tastes muted and light vapor, pull the wick and reroll it. Also search the blogs for eHuman, he has some good write ups on RBA's.

Finally at the air port!!! Coil looks great but are you vaping with or with out the fill hole plugged?

When I had a crap rolled wick I would get the super airy draws off the the AGA. I just kept refilling the same wick and WHAM!, it worked and then I experienced the tightness everyone complained about. That's a good thing, I can actually fell the juice being tugged through a hard draw in the wick.

One of the reasons I said vape a couple of tanks, you will get a feel for the wicking dynamics. Best load some low nic juice to for the experienting ;)

For now I have the fill hole unplugged. Should I plug that thing?

I don't have much luck keeping my did clone working right.. it'll work good for a day or two then the coil contracts or something and I keep getting the metallic taste that tells me there is a part of the wire not touching the wick.. take off the top cap, look close and sure enough...exposed wire. when it works it's great.. but it takes too much work to keep it working. It's just such a small platform and the wick has to be rolled so thin. I keep setting it aside. I have too many other nice rba's to keep messing with this one.

The rsst is much MUCH better.

edit.. I take back everything I just said above! I syringed out my juice, did a burn, adjusted a little and refilled.. Super nice vape :D If it would stay that way LOL

Hey, Wookie, its a CHID! My experience was anything over 3.5 volts was hit and miss. Sometimes burnt flavor, sometimes no, never for a good reason. (That's why its a dripper now). But it always tasted fine @ 3.4 volts.

edit: I can't wait til you get your RSST! ;)

What resistance coils do you usually wrap? I'm currently at .8'ish so that would bring me to around 14.45 watts. I think I tried 3.5 volts and it was not bad. I'll try again at 3.4-3.5 volts when i get home.

P.S. That brownie point is taunting me...

I've got the wick hole drilled out the same as my IGO-L. This thing is putting out tons of vapor. fogged up my car while I was on a 7-11 run and almost got pulled over by a cop. flavor is still not quite right though. The sweetness of my juices are not coming through and it seems some of the flavor notes are missing.

Do you guys vape sweet juices on your genies? Any issues w/ sweetness not coming through?

I did get my 'pat on the back'. Thanks for that but I cant make it into an avatar =p

If anything, I would sometimes get too much sweetness with the AGA; and not so much the High Notes/bright end. (oh, but that was before the Nextel and the hypershort/non-wicks)

Tell ya' what, I'll give you an avatar.

WTH is that pic of? some type of bee? lol. And here ya go having to talk about nextel :(. I have some on order w/ a buddy but we're trying to find someone w/ a kiln :). Have some SS rope coming in tomorrow as well. I'll see how that works out.

I have a good feeling though that either

a) my wick is not seasoned well enough yet
b) my wick sucks
c) I'm running my coils too hot
d) This particular device is not ideal
e) any combination of a-d.

Really wish my stupid RSST would get here already.
