Hello, this was my first sucessful wick, since getting my Ody yesterday afternoon. Did one but goofed it up, did this one and was working and vaping great for about 8-10 hours hitting it hard and chain vaping to see how it performs. Today I started tasting that it was off, not exactly burned but a bit harsher. Took top off and took juice out, ( not discoloured) but the coil area seems pretty gunked up and crusty with ashy bits. Ceramic is fine, not burned, did I wrap the coils to tight. I used cotton.

Im vaping at about 4.25 volts at less than 8 watts. Im vaping on The Plume Room 50/50 twisted turkish tobacco. Please let me know what I did wrong, or is it just the juice.

thank you

It happens, wash it off or just make a new one. Once you've done it a few times, making a new coil/wick assembly is almost too easy.

Edit: I might also add, you don't have to wrap the coil super tightly around the cotton because the wick will expand when the juice comes into contact with it. I wrap my coil snug, but not tight.

2nd edit: I didn't even realize it was you posting haha. is this the ceramic wick?

Yes its the cotton wick, thats why I thought that it was burnt, I thought it was the juice. The Twisted turkish on a carto goes only for a couple hours and Its messed up and useless. I figured 12 hours chaining it was pretty good

12 hours of chain vape on cotton wick is pretty good in my opinion. I have so much cotton and wire that I don't even bother cleaning the used ones. Are you going to recoil with the ceramic next?

Thank you manos, I will give it a try next time I re-order some wire. So thinner wire will gunk up less? Will I have to use thinner non- resistance wire also , or will it not make any difference?

Yes, the ceramic wick tastes cleaner. Ive only used the cotton a few times on my Vivi Novas and I get the same sort of drish cottony taste. Everyone seemed to go koo koo over the cotton, will everyone saying it was cleaner, but I taste the difference, but this new ceramic taste cleaner. Now, people are saying that you need to heat up the ceramic wick, but I dont have a torch so Im going to put a small piece in the oven on 500 degrees and see how it does.

Regarding the R wire, I have always used 34 gauge and I never had any problems with gunk, but sometimes the wick did burn if I was chain vaping. NR wire doesn't matter for the Ody. Most people use .999 silver. My NR wire is 30 gauge .999, what are you using now?

Edit: In my opinion, heating the ceramic wick is a must, especially if flakes are coming off of it. Although, I'm not sure if people get it red hot. I'll play around with it this weekend.

So far its performing wonderful with the new wick and wire. I really think I wrapped the coil to tightly. It was so encrusted. I soaked it in hot water, used some baking soda, gently tried to take the stuff off the coils and it was just not worth it. Its so easy to set up. Hopefully this one will last longer and now with the silica I can do a dry burn to clean it up. That video is great, he is so funny but well informed and I hope the dry burn technique works for me.

@Doke: Silver is the best conductor of electricity, which is why most people use it. If you are allergic to nickel, then stay away from it. I assume you are using kanthal as resistance wire?

It's strange but I find that nickel NR wire conducts electricity better then when I make setup with silver wire

As for the vapor production-is it better to wrap coils tight or more loose?

What type of wick are you using? If the wick doesn't expand when juice is applied (like loose cotton does) then the coils need to be tight to ensure contact. With loose cotton, I keep them just snug because I know the cotton will "grow" onto the coil. As far as the silver/nickel thing, I'm almost positive that silver is a better (the best) conductor but maybe someone can enlighten us.
