I was reading a topic started about honey tobacco and saw that they had used isopropal alcohol 99% to extract the honey flavor out of real honey.....I was intrigued and wanted to subscibe to their newsletter (5 points if you get the reference), but wanted to see what others though about extracting sugar flavors and their potential damage to cartos/atos/etc. There are premade flavorings of honey but I would rather make my own and know what is exactly in it.

I hope you can help me!!

OR if you know of a good resource for researching flavor extractions THAT would also be very awesome

SO..... after reading through that thread I have come up with the following game plan:

1. Dehydrate Raw Honey (I have an uncle and a neighbor who keep bees and I have a ronco dehydrator so I have that one covered)
2. Place Honey Crystals in mason jar and cover with 99.9% isopropal alcohol and seal jar
3. Let time do its thing ( I am thinking a couple days in my ultrasonic cleaner should speed things along
4. Evaporate off alcohol (probably boil on low heatto be sure its all out)
5. Find the "perfect" mix and enjoy

Does that sound right?

Yeah, iso is naturally denatured. (aka: makes a bad drink) It is very bitter which deters most folks from wanting to put it on their tongues.

It's not all that toxic though as it is like 4g/kg MLD so you'd have to drink quite a around 8oz. to get in the neighborhood of the dose of the MLD. I don't think it is dangerous to the kidneys like methanol though.

The vapor from it is heavier than air and flammable so it can make a good ground level explosion if heat is applied correctly/incorrectly. (Depends on how you look at it as to correct/incorrect.)

So maybe I am missing something in the abbreviations..... is "iso" and "isopropal alcohol" the same thing? That is the only reason I put it as my alcohol for this

When I use "iso" in a vaping forum, I'm avoiding spelling out "isopropyl alcohol" on my phone.

I must admit i have used iso to mean other things, but those were done about technical drawings or exercise machines so i can see the confusion.

BTW: Is isopropal a trade or brand name of a product made with isopropyl alcohol, or is it some solvent I've never heard of and i'm completely off base?

Yeah, my Hoosier accent has me put an "n" in it when pronouncing it and I keep trying to put it in when I spell it... It's one of those words I have to think about, like "fishing"...a Hoosier says "fishin" since we only put "g" on the end of a word as most would an exclamation mark.

(So, know you have some meaningless trivia when most Hoosiers say "fishing" they mean "FISHING!" and when they say "fishin" they mean "fishing".)

I figured I would need to find some kind of food grade alcohol. I have found some online thanks to google and once I make sure my method is "kosher" I will do it and make another comment on here. I have done a few tobacco extractions already and one coffee.....the tobacco ones turned out alright (the american spirit one I did was spot on actually) and the coffee one tasted like black coffee so I need to get my EM in so I can make it taste better lol

Thanks for all the input guys!

Use PGA (pure grain alcohol i.e. Everclear or Golden Grain). It can be purchased at liquor stores in most states. Some states don't allow it, like Ohio.

Your extraction process seems spot-on, otherwise. I hadn't considered extracting honey until now. The thought of dehydrating it was not something I had considered. Now that the lightbulb has been lit, I may try this myself. I extract tobacco and really enjoy TFA's Black Honey Tobacco, so you can see my direction...

What I do with tobacco extraction is, first, introduce the amount of PG equal to the yeild I expect. Then mark the container at that level. Add tobacco (obviously substitute honey in this case). Add 1/2 the amount of PG as PGA (if 10ml PG used, add 5ml PGA). I use a coffee cup warmer plate to speed evaporation. After the mixture comes close to the original mark I add another like amount of PGA, stir and strain/filter. Then, back onto the heat plate until the liquid falls to the original mark.

No, you are forgetting a very important and necessary step. Removing the sugars. The only way this is possible is via distilling. This allows the sugars to be left behind and the essence of the flavor to be extracted.

I have said this plenty lately. Anything containing sugars or oils (when it comes to extracts) must be distilled. I have tried every way under the sun short of buying a proper distiller (mega bucks I dont have) to extract fruits, nuts, and yes... honey. All you will do is ruin coils.... and quickly.

Its possible to trap some of the condensation while boiling but the quality is not worth it. Even with long steep times and what you think is saturated flavor, trapping the condensate doesnt translate thru for good flavoring for our purposes.

And as Hoosier said, distilling with alcohol as a base can be explosive.

And using dried fruit or honey (in this case) only concentrates the sugars more. Been there, done that. Hopefully I can save you some time on this.

SO..... after reading through that thread I have come up with the following game plan:

1. Dehydrate Raw Honey (I have an uncle and a neighbor who keep bees and I have a ronco dehydrator so I have that one covered)
2. Place Honey Crystals in mason jar and cover with 99.9% isopropal alcohol and seal jar

You might burn sugar onto your coils, depending on which device you use to vape with. I rebuild mine (Evod/T3's and a rebuildable dripping atomozier) so I don't worry about it too much.

I will tell you that burnt sugar on a coil gives off legit smoke, not just vapor, and it irritates the hell out of my throat, so once it starts to taste gross, do not use it again.
