I never realized that Propylene Glycol is the same stuff that is used by Respiratory Therapist giving breathing treatments. My wife is a RT for the local hospital and she told me that the base of the albuterol breathing treatments that they atomize for copd, aesthmatics, and other complex breathing issues is propylene glycol. Go Figure!!!! learn something new everyday.

Dont know about the drugs for medical atomizers, but I do know about the drugs for nebulizers.

Up 'til about a month ago, I was an engineer with a pharma co. that made the liquid drugs for nebulizers. (Albuterol and ipratropium, mostly) and they dont have any PG. salt, hydrochloric acid, DEDTA, active ingredient, water, but no PG.

But, I do know PG is used in a huge variety of other pharmaceuticals. Everything from tablets, to injectables. Its widely studied, and well understood.

Just goes to show ya tho, if you're putting it into your body, look for the USP designation. That ensures that the product you're purchasing, as packaged meets the U.S. Pharmacopoeia standards of purity.

Anything else could contain, well.. who knows.

Oh, no! I heard from the check-out lady at Walmart that PG is in anti-freeze, and that stuff is dangerous! We should BAN all "respiratory therapy" and "breathing treatments" immediately, before someone gets sick!

All products that I use .. I ensure that they are USP grade with CAS and Lot numbers , date packaged/filled and expiration!!! I feel the same way about knowing what I use and what I provide.

Quasi... that is comical but unfortunately, that is exactly what I expect as a reaction from the public. That antifreeze scare tactic definately hits a nerve in all of us and I feel your pain.

As a lot of people have pointed out, PG is also used in fog machines, but did you know that the military fire departments also use it to simulate smoke? My husband worked for the moulage and readiness teams when he was in. He would do the wound simulations and help grade the trainees on performance. Although the trainees would use masks, since that was part of their job, both raters and 'victims' would spend long periods of time inside a building so full of PG 'smoke' that you literally couldn't see the person standing 2 feet away from you.
