I look at three things... besides the quality, fit, finish and of course, the overall subjective style.
A quality button... short throw and light touch, with no radial play and no "crunch". Next, the length... I like short mods, so wasted length - an unnecessarily long top cap or button assembly... I'll take a pass.
Last would be the lock type... I prefer a recessed button with no lock (short mod again), but if it has a lock, it needs to be reverse thread with less than a turn to lock it, or an alternative to threading, like a ball detent with a lockout groove.

Or it needs to look like a box with a locking fire button! :)

In reality, it depends on your budget and what you like in a mod. There's little electrically to separate one tube mod from another, so it's about the firing button you like - the engraving you like, the batteries you intend to use and what you can fit on top of it.

Not all have adjustments to fit all batteries and atomizers and some are more versatile than others. There are too many to list but I'm going to mention my Nemesis which I would say is an icon in the world of mods. You adjust the pin to atomizer you are using so that you have a good connection whether or not that atomizer has an adjustable 510 pin, some atty have longer or shorter 510 pins, etc. Then you adjust the switch up to tighten everything up and your battery is snug whether its a flat top or button top. Fits just about any atty you can think of putting on it.

Nother one is the Sentinel. Telescoping mod so you can adjust to just about any battery you want to put in it. Love the fire button too. It's a pleasure to fire.

You'd be correct in general to say they all do the same thing. Some just do it better than others.

Contacts play a significant role some are copper very good but require regular cleaning, Rhodium highly conductive almost never need cleaning, Silver very good but needs to be cleaned, ss, brass and in some very poorly made mods the metal was unidentified. Also some mods are just more conductive I am not sure of the science of this but I believe it is the way the switch is made and the materials used in the mod itself. Inside the switch mods usually have either a spring or a set of magnets both of which can range dramatically in quality. Finally as stated above the fit of everything. I have several friends with mods that rattle and the threads are sketchy at best and the conductivity of these are really poor sometimes resulting in hot button issues as well as shorts.
I also have found that telescoping mods tend to have a little more voltage drop in my experience may just have been the mods but they were well made.

@supertrunker "depends on your budget" Know how much gear I'd have if this wasn't an issue?

Yep.

My point about budget is that you can get a good vape from a K100, but you'll not get the magnetic switches and engraving of say a Stingray. I'm well aware of vaping on limited money, but i also know what i used to spend on cigarettes.

I would even argue budget can get you a VERY well performing authentic new or used Mechanical Mod especially more and more these days. The Poldiac Nanos is under $100 brand new shipped from Greece with an almost hybrid Rhodium over brass contacts that has a very nice magnetic locking switch.. This was unheard of just a year ago and they are always in stock. Just to name one the K100's are another very well performing device.

Vaping on a budget doesn't have to be limiting

All these are clones. None over $30.

Regardless of what some will tell you, yes there are differences in performance, but most are due to design and not composition.

Important things to consider are contacts and switch design.
These two factors will play a more important role in performance than the materials used.
Read as many different review of the mod you like before you pull the trigger.

I think it is important to point out that money well spent on well made devices is the best choice for those on a budget I am glad to see threads on here that point to Authentic mods with confirmed quality and proven track record. Before someone goes and buys Cheap, Cloned, or poorly made mech mods consider whether you are gambling with quality and consider how long a well made device will last you.

Why I bought a Stingray (clone):

Venting in the top cap as well as the switch for safety in case of a battery malfunction.
Floating pin in top cap for ease of setup.
Good venting in top cap for attys that get airflow through the bottom.
Nice switch.
Silver plated copper contacts.
Smaller than some mechs.

I paid more to get a better clone, but I wanted one that worked well.

I am not sure spending over $1000 on Clones indicates someone on a budget?

Just imagin those were all legit pieces.
I could buy a Benz for that price.

I do my research, those are all excellent clones.
I repair mods for a couple of shops, so I have a solid reference point for quality and performance.

I am able to experience a wide variety of mod styles without spending a small fortune.

Budget vaping to the extreme!

I don't know what you're smoking in your hookah there, caterpillar, but ya oughta share it over here. It's gotta be good. Those threads aren't about "Authentic mods with confirmed quality and proven track record". They are just lists of mods that some people don't think of as copies. Nothing to do with quality whatsoever. And not really a whole lot of authenticity, either.

Well your opinion is certainly noted but most of the mods on both lists are pretty proven and yes they are not clones.. but they are almost all pretty darn tried and tested. As far as authenticity sure some are very close replicas of originals but for someone on a budget that feels they need to buy a ripped off logo and shoddy workmanship these lists are great places to start to avoid those things.

I think we can agree that in order to get real top quality and truly authentic mods many of the mods on these lists are not quite there but then again these lists are a good start for people on a budget.
