You know that white, sometimes orange, powdery substance that appears on faucets and dishes? Boil a pan of tap water down to next to nothing if you happen to keep your stuff clean enough that you've never seen it.

Now, imagine that covering the coil and wick in your carto/atty.

It just gunks up the working parts quicker. If you'd rather spend you money on cartos and attys than a jug of distilled water that would last you for quite awhile, then that's your choice.

Distilled water is made from steam so all of the minerals are removed. It's used in clothing irons etc so they don't get hard water deposits. You can usually find distilled water way at one end of the spring water aisle in a grocery.

If you are using cartomizers, you could probably get away with using tap or spring water since a carto only lasts 7-10 days of continuous use anyway. For atomizers though, I recommend distilled.

You don't HAVE to use distilled water. Like Hoosier (and others) said... it's about mineral content.

I'm in the "I retire an atty after a month of use" camp, so Meh. You can always thin with PG too. I seldom add any water to my DIY.

Cheap distilled water: Boil pot with 1/4 inch of water on stove, put lid on for a minute or two, collect condensation. You usually only need a few drops anyway. Don't boil it dry, of course.

As for cleaning atties... I use hot tap water. I blow it all out (well, 99%) anyway, and usually blow out the first few drops of e-juice too. The amount of minerals collecting on the coil is minimal... vastly exceeded by any other "stuff" in the juice (read flavoring).

I think a lot depends where you live and what is in your water.

Where I live, I don't even like to put tap water in my Car Radiator or Window Washers Tank. It is Very "Hard Water". High in Minerals.

I vape High VG Based e-Liquids. I used to thin with Botled Water. But then I tried thinning with Pure PG. I think PG helps bring out the Flavor of an e-Liquid where as Water seemd to dilute it.
