Hey all,

I recently started making my own e juice. I got a kit from a popular site and since my gf is borrowing my laptop i got an app for my phone called planet of the vapes.

I put in the calculator that i wanted to make a 30ml batch (after brewing a test run at 5 ml first) and followed the drop amounts for everything except the nic. For the nic i used a syringe with meassurings (sp?) printed on it.

When i was done adding anything my 30ml bottle was only half full.

Is this because my drops varied in size? Is the drop method highly inaccurate?

I Only added enough nic to be at 6mg, but since there is less juice in the bottle i assume its around 12mgs per ml.again, the nic measurements were accurate due to clear ml measuring guide on the syringe.

hi @speedoman , then large majority of DIY'ers use syringes to measure ingredients into their juices. The majority of recipes are in ml measurements also. With half of a 30 ml bottle empty I'd say there is a lot off. Without knowing your measurements, how many drops you used per ml, or the numbers on your nic and base (pg/vg) it's pretty difficult to help. A 20% recipe would have 6 ml of flavor in a 30ml bottle, the rest being nic, pg and vg. You could check these links for an online calculator:

E JUICE CALCULATOR
eJuice Me Up - Best eJuice Calculator (pc)
DIY E-Liquid Calculator Ten Flavors Plus PG/VG Adjusting (online)

You can find bulk syringes on amazon and ebay at a decent price.

Good luck.

Sound plan. The syringes will work for small quantities. A graduated cylinder would be the next step up. You can get plastic ones el cheap-o and I just saw a set of 5 (5, 10, 25,50, 100ml) on eBay for <$14.00. Any DIY supply store also sells them, although the markup is higher. One caveat: VG is a very viscous fluid. It doesn't pour well into or out of a small diameter tube. It likes to get stuck to the walls and take forever to settle down so you can read the measurements. If you're intentionally making tiny batches, I'm saying, a 10ml cylinder is going to be a PITA to use, and a 100ml cylinder is hard to read for <10 or 12ml. One hint on that would be to pre-mix your base-- assuming you use a reasonable PG/VG ratio-- and get a calculator that allows it's use. The PG will thin down the VG and it will be easier to do. Plus simpler; Just measure out the base and add flavor and nic plus a tiny bit ot PG or VG to even the ration back up to 50-50 or whatever you want when you calculate the base the flavor and nic are using. I make mine in rather larger batches. Yesterday was juice day around my chateau, and I did three flavors and 120ml of each-- a 4 oz bottle. But then, I already have settled recipes for those 3 flavors. When I'm still working out a favor, I make it 5-15 ml at a time, to give it a fair trial and so there's enough left after a tank so I can add a bit more sweet or flavor by drops to get a hint about which direction I need to go. Again FWIW, the measuring method I use are Mohr's pipettes. That's a kind of lab glass too. They're expensive but fast and useful. If you can find some used ones for sale-- I did, after waiting a while-- you can get 'em cheaper.

Edit: The second link for calculators Sir2 posted has a number of them, not just one, and one of them allows you to use pre-made juice if you know what's in it. That would accommodate a pre-mixed PG/VG base. Go to the calculators page and look for the one that let's you use other juices.

Finally, I'll bet you can salvage the bottle you made. You said you know it's got the right nic, but is only half full. So double the droppage of everything else, and I'll bet you come close to the right area.

Just wanted to share my favorite calculator.

Dot1ml (online)

If you create a profile, you can save all of your recipes and set a default Nic base. There is also a recipes page to see what other users are making. You can copy (and credit) other users recipes and change them to your own liking using the calculator.

Yes the drop method is highly inaccurate. Depending on the viscosity of your liquid, and the size of the aperture in your dropper cap, you might find anywhere from 20-60 drops in a milliliter. In my opinion, the drop method is completely useless unless you "calibrate" your drops beforehand so as to know what exactly you are working with.

Thanks for all the replies and information. I will be getting better equipment soon. The juice ive made is really good and i figure its at 12mg nic.

In the mean time i will be doubling my drops (excluding my nic) to try and lower the nic to around 6. I know this will change the flavor but hopefully not ruin the juice.

For my first attempt i think it went well. I made a cucumber lime whipped cream. Very smooth and refreshing.

Good luck. If you double the drops of the flavors too, the flavor should stay about the same. Just don't add any more nic.

Three Questions I would Ask:

1 - How many Drops per Milliliter did you use?

2 - Did you Check the Drops per ml by Counting Drops of water into an empty Syringe until you get to 1ml?

3 - When you Measure 30ml of Water using your Syringe, does it Fill Up the Bottle you said was 1/2 Empty?

Never use drops as measurement, it's highly inaccurate and extremely hard to replicate if you end up making that "perfect" recipe. Tbh, idk why the newer calculators even list drops.

Nothing wrong with using Drops.

In fact, they are Remarkably Accurate and Precise as long as the Same Sized Dropper is Used.
