I just happened to have the project box, old hard drive and several computer fans around. I don't see why you couldn't go to a mom and pop comp store and see if they have a old hardrive you can take apart for the magnets. I bought the fan new since the ones I had here were 1800 and 2000RPM and almost antique, so I bought a 2500 rpm fan for a few bucks and the comp store here he had a used computer fan controller and sold that to me for a couple bucks.
"DIY magnetic mixer" in YouTube and your on your way, thats all I did. I did have to get my stirbars out of ebay china, the 20mm is what I use most but going to get another 20mm and a 25 and 30mm on my next order. I have a 10 and 15mm but don't use those ones much since I rarely mix in the plastic jugs.

I should have added that remove the blades from the fan, I just scored both sides with a drywall knife and they snapped off with a little cosmetic scraping the blade flush and the mixer spins faster and now I can install a couple LED lights to light up the mix while its spinning to watch the bubbles move around(a bit of nifty uselessness) along with a el cheapo volt display from fasttech so I can use the volts display to determine the speed. If you can't get a fan controller then a variable 12volt power supply is what I was using till I get the controller. DON'T get a potentiometer from ebay china, I did and they don't work at all. but I got an assortment of beakers and glass syringes the same time I got the stirbars

I have the little magnets, little thicker ones and ones I use as button top for my flattop batts. I didn't want to use those magnets, IMO the hardrive magnet is stronger. The hardrive magnet is a rather large U shape that fits ontop the fan motor quite well, I just used a thick 2 way tape to hold the magnet in. Youtube "remove hard drive magnet" and you'll see how the magnets are. I use the 2nd one to fish the stirbar out of the container via up the side and out the top. I used one of my button top magnets on a stainless dental tool(cut the pointy off and file flat) also to fish the magnet out. How big of mixes are you planning on making will determine how effective the stirplate will be. 100mls is a perfect size for my mixer but I can mix 250mls but its a lot of thick VG to spin around.
