I am an experienced DIY blender. The trouble is I was never a menthol smoker and I have no knowledge of DIY menthol blends. I try to keep some good tobacco like flavors around to assist new vapers or those considering vaping. My question is this. Do you use a tobacco flavor base to get a good cigarette like menthol taste or just menthol? Any recipes would be appreciated!

Yes, me too. My wife smokes menthol and keeps backsliding. I've considered:

0.5% M-Type + 4% Menthol (10% in PG) for a Kool-like taste, or
7% HS Desert Ship + 4% Menthol (10% in PG) for Camel-like.

But then I was never a menthol smoker, and really have no idea what might taste good. She has an affinity for Kools but will also smoke Camel Crush Blacks. Fortunately she only smokes a few a day. The only menthol I've proffered was JC's Tundra - nice but obviously not doing the trick.

Help please!

My first batch with menthol was Hangsen RY1 @ 7% and Signature Menthol at 2%. Also added a few drops of Koolada. The menthol overpowered the RY1. Cut it down to 1% and that was better for me. I need to try with a stronger tobacco base, maybe Desert Ship (which I like solo) like you mentioned. I used to like Camel Crush lights. But I'll still start closer to 1% and work up.

I finally came up with a menthol I like. It's mostly my ADV. Of course, plug these figures into the calculator of your choice, adding your own nicotine beginning and ending strengths. I know you know that, but my left-thinking analytical brain made me say it anyway

Cowboy Blend 2%
Menthol 3.5%
Marshmallow 1%
Pharmacy Saline (0.9% solution) 2%
Spearmint 1 drop/10ml

Seems like the tiny bit of salt in the saline solution makes the flavors brighten just a bit, and it doesn't need steeping, at least for me. I make it at about 10mg nicotine and 50PG/50VG. I guess you could use just distilled water, but I don't know if it would be the same. Also, I use a back rub massager for shaking my juice, and it shakes it so well, it's cloudy for a little while from all the almost microscopic bubbles in it. Don't know if that mixes it so well it doesn't need steeping, not sure...

Another one I make for my granddaughter's boyfriend doesn't have any tobacco flavoring, and it seems like it would be too sweet for me, but he likes it. It's basically a cotton candy juice with spearmint flavoring:

Ethyl Maltol 10%
Spearmint 1 drop/10ml

Again, 50PG/50VG, but he wants it at 24mg nicotine.

Be forewarned, spearmint is VERY strong, so approach with caution in batches smaller than 10ml.

I thought I wanted a menthol cinnamon type flavor for my first DIY, menthol smokes are very unlike menthol e-juice though.

TFA creme de menthe, EM, and TFA koolada, without any tobacco flavor came close to what I recall a menthol smoke to be (its kind of nice to have a fuzzy memory of such things).

If I were to do it again I'd use a honey tobacco with the above ingredients.

I used slightly more of the CDM than koolada, and the juice was a bit heavy on the Vicks like taste with the cool effect about as close to a camel crush as I recall.

With that said for your wife I'd start with koolada in your nic PG/VG base and add menthol in 1/8 to 1/4% increments.

In my limited experience the menthol takes a bit of time to saturate the juice completely, so a short steep will be needed to see the full effect of the menthol.

As for adding the EM, in my opinion it almost seems to amplify the menthol, I like how it adds body to the vape, but dislike how it works with menthol.

I know this isn't anything near a recipe, but its my observations on the topic of menthol.

I have two tries steeping now. I could even tell by the initial smell steeping was in order. I will know in a few days. Thanks for the input!
