Well, lets put it this way, If you have to ask, it is probably safer.

Example:
My IPV-mini2, just in the last few days, started giving my Rough to dry hits. As I know the Tank, the build, the Mod, I assumed I'd over wicked it last cleaning.(fresh coils)
After Rebuilding the Tank(Again), Bang - Same results.

I took a Squinty look at the display(tiny v/ohm) and realized it is reading a .48ohm build as .9ohms.
Now, if you don't know - That means the Mod is producing WAY MORE than the 30w reading on the screen.

For me, after realizing, it is a non-issue. I Verified the Ohm reading on Both my build Box/.48ohm and DMM/.49ohm which confirmed the Mod is now off.

Having that Knowledge allows me to compensate for a Known Error.

Happily Vaping with an 18w reading on the Mods screen.:D

I'll crack it open and see if the failing connection can be repaired shortly. (Another use for the DMM)

Is any DMM under $500 going to be accurate at the resistances we use, though? In just about any other application, a resistance reading that low is basically a dead short, I thought.

To measure the lower resistances we use the cheapest option is a dedicated ohm reader with a 510 connector. A good quality DMM that has decent accuracy and resolution in the low resistance range is not cheap think 100's of $ rather than 10's of $. When buying you need to check both the resolution and the accuracy in the range you are interested in measuring. Many cheap meters are not really giving an accurate measurement more of an indication. A DMM is a very useful tool to have around as it makes fault finding much easier, checking batteries, chargers and mod output voltage is pretty simple. luckily most of the cheaper DMM's are accurate enough in the DC voltage range (but not the resistance range) I don't trust the resistance measurements and indicated outputs on the vast majority of the mods available and would say that with a regulated mod a DMM and ohm reader are good options to have. With a mech they are a must have.

Absolutely necessary? Not really. Good to have if you can afford it? Yes. I'm fortunate in that I have access to a lot of test equipment, and I personally own a few moderately expensive pieces of gear.
For vaping, though, I've found that the first atomizer tester I bought is accurate enough for what I'm doing. I test all my builds on it, and then check on the mod.

And as Layzee Vaper wrote, with a mech, it really is a must have.
