do dual coils really need to be the same resistance?

Hey guys hows it going? writing in from charlotte, NC as I drink some raging b*&%# IPA's! So I have been using a .3-.4 ohm build that a buddy of mine made for me for a while now (im sure some of you remember me from some threads I have made :D). So all has been going good until I was cleaning and rewicking my rda last night, and I noticed one of the coils had 6 wraps and one had 7... So the resistance of the two cant be the same. I always heard everyone say that when doing duals, the resistance of each coil needs to be the same. so I bought some more 26g kanthal tonight to rebuild another at the same resistance while I drink some brews. just wanted to ask if the two duals really have to be the same.... mine obviously are not and have been performing great. just wondering if they were the same number of wraps, would I notice an actual increase in performance, or is it more of a safety type thing?

edit: before anyone says anything, I am using sony vtc5's!! I know I am safe for this build. yeah my buddy did build it for me, but it was with my kanthal, and I wouldn't run it if it was not safe for this low of a build!

Sometimes I also have different number of wraps for mine. I really can't tell a difference. I'm guessing that one wrap of coil off is not too bad. Maybe if it was three or more? I'm not sure of the saftey issues.

nope, if you read my original post, I was actually having no noticeable drop in performance. I recounted several times and it was only one coil off, so I figured it was no problem. thanks for the response though!

edit: oops! just realized you said maybe if it was three or more wraps off, not that my build might be three or more off! sorry lol :)

You are not going to create any Dangerous situation as long as the coils are of some acceptable resistance each and total.
You can create a good or Poor condition for use.
The coils will heat at varying rates and to different degrees.

Wonders if the two different brands and types of stock dual coils I use are wrapped with the same number, since quality control is not always optimal in mass production facilities.

DING DING. We have a winner!

The reason people say to build the coils at the same resistance, isn't because your mod won't fire if they aren't. The reason is because if you build your coils at different resistances, they will each fire differently, and this can cause problems with your build, such as one coil getting hotter, and heating up FASTER, then the other coil. This can cause obvious problems in a build.

Even one wrap difference will cause a discrepancy, not necessarily a problem though.

Technically, no, there's no reason they can't be different resistances--even wildly different resistances if you want.

The total resistance of the dual coil will always be less than the resistance of the lowest-resistance coil, however. So if you have a 1-ohm coil and a 4-ohm coil, resistance will be less than 1 ohm. In this instance, it'll be 0.8 ohms total, actually.

So you could end up sub-ohming by accident and should, as always, know what you're doing and know your battery.
