Do e-cigs have to be broken in...? All of a sudden it works

I ordered a pen style e-cig, received it about 5 days ago, charged it up for 12 hrs. and tried to use it. I got little to no vapor and was coughing my brains out. I figured it was the product or that I was doing something wrong and I piled on the juice... then, I cleaned the atomizer... (cat chasing it's tail...)... over and over again. Ordered a different model from a different supplier and except for an occassional few puffs throughout the day went back to analogues.

Then, this morning I was reading about a little plastic cover being on the end of the cartridges and I thought ... Could I have put the first one in without noticing? I'm still using the 1st cartridge.

So, I opened other cartridges and saw that there was no way not to notice that plastic cover and that often it gets caught inside the outer plastic cover. So, my 1st cartridge was ok.

Bottom line, this morning I put in a new cartridge and a new battery and voila. It is working and I'm not coughing. I can't believe I'm actually getting a visible vapor.

So do e-cig need a break in period to start functioning properly? This is like day and night for me... it's very, very different.

I read coughing and wanted to question this. Here is my tail the first e cigs I got came with cartridges, described as full strength Marlborough. One puff and I was coughing like the first real cigs I ever smoked, a couple of my friends that smoke gave it a try and they too had the same reaction. Not to be deterred I got some medium strength menthol, tried that and same results. Have you folks had or heard of anyone who has experienced this?

The instructions that came with them are very sparse when it comes to much info.

Any input appreciated, as I cannot stand the reaction.

My first e-cigs (and still the only kind I've used) are the two-part models (Smoke 51, GreenSmoke, EAZE Magnum, etc.) and I did not have any problems like you describe. They worked right from the start (using medium-strength carts).

I've not experienced any coughing either. I do get a little headache every once in a while if I vape too much or for too long, but no coughing at all.

Most 1st time users cough the 1st few times (seems like 60-70%) and adjust to it before they even use up the first cartridge up (for some it takes longer depending on the harshness of the juice).

Headaches usually mean the strength (MG) is too high for you... buy a lower level and mix them til you don't get headaches.

Most of the e-cigs (and new atomizers) take a few days (or a few hours.. depending how heavy you puff) to break in...

Hope that helps...

yup. Atomizers break in, then they break. So keep extras on hand. I keep 3 at all times.

So true. My 901 atomizer was working fabulously, the best ever - smooth & strong, (~3 weeks old) until yesterday when it broke. I feel lost without it 8-o

I'm now praying that my other models hold up until a replacement arrives 'cos I don't want to go back to analogs.

Gus, mine are menthol, too. And, I think I, also, picked marolboro, too.
The stuff that was sent to me isn't labeled clearly. I think I got som Virginian in there, too. But, I didn't try that yet.

Could it be the "flavors" we picked?

However, this morning when it was working correctly, I wasn't coughing. So maybe, it's what ever "stuff" that the atomizer is primed with that makes us cough???

The primer liquid is nasty! Bleh! I never inhale that stuff. It makes me sick. Just puff on the new atomizer till it's ready for a refill (not inhaling) and drip 2 drops in of one of your flavors. Honestly, I don't inhale even the second time because you can still taste that primer, but after that you should be good to go :).

We were discussing this elsewhere and another thing people are finding with headaches is that the PG is possibly more dehydrating to the system so drink plenty of water. It helps. (Headaches are a sure sign of dehydration in any environment so drink a glass of water before going to the Tylenol).

Ditto on the primer liquid: puff it but don't inhale.

With atomisers, mileage varies. My white mini was lousy, then suddenly started working like a dream (after more than a month of use, but very occasional. I usually vape penstyles). Now I'm waiting for it to break ;)

Some of the batteries are very weak too, even after a long charge. Saying that, I now always charge my penstyles for 8-12 hours and they seem to do better.
