Yeah but cant i just use steamengine?
As others have pointed out, Steamengine will give you estimates of your results, but that's all they are. Estimates.
For safety's sake you need ACTUAL readings.
I realize that if you're new to vaping, you've probably already spent a lot of money on "start-up costs" but a multi meter just isn't the place to get cheap now.

Do you have a regulated mod to provide the resistance? It is possible to use a regulated mod to measure and burn in a coil, but it's not as convenient as a device like 521 tab that does all that and give you a stable base for building. Either way, yeah, like everyone has already stated, checking the resistance of a build is not optional.

For about $40 you can get the Coilmaster DIY Kit Version 3, which includes that device and a bunch of fun stuff to build coils with. The cotton that comes in the kit kind of sucks though.

When I bought my kit I actually handed the cotton back to them before I left the store. Perhaps not all of them are quite so bad, but I took one look at it and said "nope". Swapped it out for some (literally dusty) rayon and that was the end of that.

I bought mine online so I didn't see the cotton until I already had it. But I also bought some fancy shmancy cotton to try out on the same order, and I had some Ninja Wick laying around because I was able to get it for store credit somewhere else and the little tin that it came in was cool. Coilmaster>Ninja Wick>Native Wicks Platinum Blend. But they each have their pros and cons. Seems like the crappier the cotton the easier it is to get through the coil.

Local Walgreen pharmacy has cheap organic cotton balls and pads. Both work great.

I’ve been working on a bag of those Walgreens organic cotton ball for over three years now. Still about half full. Tried some KGD. and rayon, went right back to the organic cotton balls. Suppose my taste buds aren’t too discerning anymore.

It really depends on your level of experience. If you`v wound hundreds of coils, know your atomizer, and know what to expect, maybe not. Lord knows that once I figure out what my preferred coils run I kinda stop using it for new builds. If you are just starting out and don`t even know what your coil preference is or how much it usually ohm`s out to, most certainly. Even then there are times when you want to build so close to the air inlet you want to check and make sure its not grounding out with the cap on. And there are also times when you can use it to diagnose a problem that`s running you in circles scratching your head. Fact is its better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

And for what its worth, a 10 dollar ohm meter, and some built in`s on regulated devices, are almost as dangerous as not using one or just saying f it altogether. Some of these cheapo ohm meters can be off so much you might as well just short the battery and be done with it. I had an e-leaf that was 5 points higher (.05) then it should have been! Get a good one, Like a USA brand or better, one that tells you it has actually been tested and meets bonafide error limits.

BOL.

the ohm function on a dmm for 10 bucks isnt off. unless you havent turned it on, the battery is dead, or the fuse is blown. I prefer to use a dmm over a topper ohm meter. i really only like them to build on not for resistance measurements.

Really? My $20 harbor freight dmm is`nt even stable in the hundredths of a ohm. I think if that were true, you would`nt find a DMM over ten bucks, but instead, you can spend a grand on a DMM. How do you explain that?
I have 2 harbor freight dmms that work just fine right next to a blue point and a fluke
