I just read elsewhere on this Forum that the USB pass throughs 'die' after awhile..... I wasn't aware of that and that's the biggest reason I purchased one.

I mean, isn't that the 'purpose' of the pass through?... that you have a non-battery reliant 'source' so that you can vape almost worry free?

Please forgive me for being such a  but I'm a little 'challenged' when it comes to 'all things electronic'.. but I can be enlightened (as long as you use 'layman's' terms.... :)

Can someone further explain and/or clarify this to me?

From what I have heard - mine keeps working fine - they are not exactly build to last a few decades. Cables break, the battery (if yours has one) can give out (those are easily replaced, though) and so on.

Still, on average I would say, since one costs little more than a battery, and it probably safes you more than just one, it's worth buying them.

If you do need to replace the batteries, in many those are exactly the same ones sold for e-cigars. The usual Chinese suspects (dealextreme, lightinthebox, focalprice) have them even cheaper. Search for 10440.)

I have 5 510 batt-box-type PTs, all purchased Sept and Oct. Two stopped working outright, even with fresh 10440 batts. Three work as PVs, that is their batts still power the atty, but they will not charge the batts from the USB. I have an external Li-batt charger now with a bunch of batteries. I keep them charged then swap them when the batt in the box runs low. If I open up the box completely I might be able to see why the power from the USB is not getting to the battery, but I've not done that yet.

The 510 PT is a very low cost device that is designed to give and take current almost continuously. Like most standard PV hardware, it is not meant to last forever...indeed the wiring and connections inside them are cheap and rather flimsy. A "straight-wire" 5V PT, one that doesn't have a batt box, should last longer, but this kind of device really needs to be on an external 5V power source, as it will draw while powering the atty more current than that which is required for charging a batt, and is more of a threat to USB ports, and possibly a mother board. But then I've read where 510 PTs with batt boxes fried mother boards too. Bottom line is PTs should be either plugged into an AC/5V-USB adapter (with at least a 1 Amp rating), or else a powered external USB hub.

All this said, the 510 PT for the money is a good investment, but since it costs about the same as a regular batt, and few dollars more then an atty, one should not expect their longevity to surpass those devices significantly. They are certainly not ultra-rugged high-end hardware, and their cost reflects that. And most vendors give a month warranty or more on their hardware. The chinese companies generally give up to 6 month warranties, but shipping is more $$ and slower, and you would have to pay to ship it back to china to exchange it.

However, since a well-built reliable chargeable PT for my 510 attys is very important to me, as soon as I get some money rather than buy another 510 PT I will be getting a Bartleby or some similar high-end mod.

Hi there! ...

For sure, the battery has to be good! If you remove the battery (or if it dies) you get no voltage to the atomizer.

There are connections in the USB plug, connections in the battery box and connections in the barrel. If any of these got a "Monday Morning" soldering job, we've got a problem.

If the wire gets smacked / crimped, that's bad, too. If you leave it plugged in forever (either in your PC or a Wall Adapter) some believe that it shortens the battery's life. No flames, please - I don't have an opinion!

So .... stuff happens, huh?

I don't have one of those myself, but I did hear they are excellent quality.

I'd never plug a PT or even a loader into anything but my trusted powered hub, BTW. I have an USB ventilator that gave me considerable trouble this summer. Ever since, powered hub for anything not striktly computer and trusted brand.

Wow! 8-o So many knowledgeable & thorough answers! I'm glad I asked this Question. You Guys have given me some information I can assimilate at any rate...:D

My USB PT is the Cig-Easy KR808d-1 (if that makes a difference) and when I purchased it I just automatically 'assumed' it would be a little 'hardier' and more 'reliable' than my regular battery powered models.

I'll definitely keep it unplugged and I'll handle it carefully.
I'm also going to find another 'source' for power as I don't want to 'hurt' my PC which is also my 'life-line'....

Just get a powered hub, those things are not very expensive and quite useful for all those USB gadgets that use fairly much power. Or an adapter for wall outlets. No need not to use the PT, they are neat. Just not build for eternity ;)

Disclaimer: I'm not associated with dealextreme in any way, merely showing what I was talking about.
