Hey all, finally got paid again to buy some new wick and wire, been running through so many because I've been practicing my coil making skills.
I've tried solid eckowool and its pretty nice, but I think I'm going to stick with silica for now because its kinda easier to thread through my coils.

I've used 28g and 30g kanthal, and also some bacario ribbon wire (I think that's how you pronounce it)

anyways, I used to just wrap my wire over a folded wick, but recently I've been making my coils first and checking the ohms and making sure they're glowing bright and evenly on my atty and then threading the wick ever so carefully through.

I made these coils last night and they ended at .5 ohms together. 30g kanthal with 2-3 wrap folded silica. for some reason, the coils I make first and check if they're glowing bright red, don't produce as much clouds as coils I just wrap the wire around freehand.. and the taste is kind of not there either

can anyone tell me if I should bring my wraps closer together or make them smaller, etc

I know it's not that good, but I'm practicing

thanks everyone

more than likely the whole coil is not making contact with the wick itself. When you wrap it prior to adding wick, you are more than likely using something as a template and it is more round. And the wick after it is threaded in my not be making full contact with the coils.

When you wrap the wire around the wick, you are making full contact with the wicking material... I believe that is what is happening.

yeah I thought something like that was happening, but its just you produce nicer and more even coils if you make the coil first. I'll try again later. just read about some battery stuff and might be raising my resistance for a safer vape

I've found a really nifty little trick I use when I make my micro's...I am using 2mm silica and 28g kanthal...Those little directional sprayers that you get on cans of WD-40, the red ones, work AMAZING for making micros before threading the silica. Even wraps, super tight coils, exceptionally even burn. Wrap that around 6 or so times, oxidize, and thread your silica through. I'd post a pic but I'm at work. Also...if you have not invested in a needle threader or bead threader, get your .... over to a Hobby Lobby / Michael's and get you one asap. It makes threading your silica super easy onto pre-rolled micro coils.

Nano dragon coils are super easy to make... 9-12 wraps around a mini hex and the coil is done, then just bed it in some sort of wick and youre done... Glows evenly every time for me and with the hex that comes with a cobra every wrap is about .1 ohm with 28g

Not exactly genesis style taste but great taste for a rda... The clouds however gets pretty darn huge when its dual venting and bedded just right... You can even wrap a little wick around the coil for extra flavor, but they do gunk up pretty fast then

thanks everyone for the input. I would try the nano coils and bed the coil in cotton but I heard once you hit dry 1 time, the cotton will burn and you have to change out the cotton.. and I'm not going to have cotton all the time when I'm out. and sometimes i don't know my silica is dry until I accidentally hit it dry.

I'll definitely try the pin in the eckowool

how do you thread silica through a microcoil? It's hard for me to even thread silica in a normal premade coil let alone thread it through an even smaller coil

Another vote for micro coils and cotton. In a dripper you don't really have to worry about it going too dry before the next drip, because you learn to taste when it's getting close. You can go days without changing the cotton as long as you aren't switching flavors. But when it is time to change, it's easy as pie and soooo cheap. CVS sterile cotton - $6 - lifetime supply.

This video taught me how to wrap the perfect micro coil - I highly recommend this.

gosh all these pictures and stuff really make me want to keep practicing. I tried making a nano coil with a paper clip, but in guessing I'm not bedding the coil in the cotton right? the patriot atty fires it beautifully but when I try to bed the cotton it's a fail, and it sputters and doesn't produce vape when all these other videos I watch have massive vapor coming out without even inhaling.
I'm really interested in the cotton and bedding the coil though...
as for threading silica through a microcoil, you still pretty much have to find something similar to the size of the silica to have it tight but not too small or big right?

I just tried wrapping my micro coil on a 1/8 drill tip instead of a 5/64. This enabled me to feed a much larger piece of cotton through my coil. I am producing absolutely amazing clouds of great tasting vapor - almost double what I was before.

Ingredients to this delicious recipe:
28 gauge Kanthal round wire - 5 wraps on a 1/8 drill tip - heat and squeeze till all coils meet = 1.1 ohms resistance
CVS sterile rolled cotton
Trident RDA on a mechanical mod with a fresh AW IMR 18650 battery

Bon Apetite!

I've tried several types of wick including silica, fabric ceramic, and TWIK Ekowool and twisted organic cotton yarn hybrid. Cotton is still better. Which is amazing considering how much cheaper it is.

As far as trying to create the bed of cotton underneath the coil for the "Dragon" effect, I've not been successful with this build either. I've been able to get it to produce the same amount of vapor as threading a very thin cotton piece through a micro coil wrapped on a 5/64th drill tip, but no more. And not as much vapor as threading a larger piece of cotton through a micro coil wound on a 1/8 drill bit. Frustrating because I've watched the videos of the "Dragon" build and there really is massive cloud production that I can't seem to attain (and I've followed instructions to the letter). But in the end, it doesn't matter because threading the cotton through the coil, so long as you keep the piece of cotton thin enough that when it expands after absorption, it does not choke the ends of the coil, you are going to have an extremely satisfying vape. And the flavor is absolutely stellar.

I don't have a picture because I did it at my friends house and left earlier, but tomorrow I'm going to try again. I only have 30g kanthal so ill probably wrap it 4-5? I'll take pictures tomorrow. as for bedding the coil, I think I'll pass on that if threading cotton through the coil works magic. can't wait to try it. btw 1/8 is about the size of a q-tip?

I think 5 wraps is too few... I usually do about 8-10 with 28g wire... What is the ohms on that 5 wrap 30g?
