Alright I am new to making my own coils (since my local shop sells coils for $5 each). Now for some reason the coil that is from the "Factory" produces more vapor. I have read many threads about how making your own coil is so much better than buying them factory.

I am using a 2.5mm silica wick with 32ga Kanthal wire, I do roughly 4-5 wraps (This is a protank Mini coil BTW), and I also add another piece of wick onto the wick that has the coil wrapped around it.

Now the method I use now is I put a needle through the middle of the silica wick and wrap the coil around the wick, and then I assemble then remove the needle.

I might be making them to tight, but I don’t know for sure (I have tried to reduce the strength I use when wrapping my coils, and no change)

Would wrapping them around lets say a 2.6mm screw (since I have 2.5mm wick), and then sliding the wick into the coil make a better performing coil?

FYI I don't know if they really make a 2.6mm screw or not, I just used that solely as an example.

How's the performance building them the way you are? If you like the action, no need to change...

If you wrap too tight, or screw wind and stuff too much wick in, it won't wick properly and you'll get a lot of dry hits. If you're not getting dry hits, and not leaking through the bottom, you're probably ok.

With the guage and number of turns you cite, you should be getting about 2.4 ohms, so that part sounds fine :)

Alright I think I just fixed it, I opened up my coil just now and the coils were a little to far spaced out. So I pushed them together and it seems to be working a whole lot better.

Also you said I was running around 2.4 ohm (I dont have a ohm meter), and the factory coils are set at 2.2 ohm, which could be a reason why they are hitting better (since I dont change the voltage on my battery).

Im at work currently, and I don't have the time or supplies to be messing with it right now.

When I get home im going to do some Trial and Error, and see if I cant get it the way I want it.

Unless you have a mod with a built in ohm check, you really need to get a meter. A shorted coil can quickly destroy your battery!

And VV or VW is certainly a good way to go, so you can adjust for coil resistance variations, and for different flavors.

That's one advantage of winding on a screw - the threads will guarantee an even and consistent spacing. Without practice :)

IIRC, the PT (and most Kanger heads) use a 3 mm silica wick, topped with two 1 mm strands for flavor wicks.

try 28awg kanthal and build a micro coil 32awg is not thick enough in diameter and a micro coil will end up at 3.0 ohm or higher shoot for 1.5-1.8omh should be about 9 or 10 wraps around a 2mm dill bit then wick with cotton you will never buy a head again and if you do you will strip the new one and build it yourself again my pro tanks hit like train and when they start to go bad i just take it out pull the cotton out dry burn the gunk off and rewick with cotton and they are good again look at rip trippers video on you tube very good tutorial

I use a 1/16th drill bit and it works great. took a few times to get it right but it is wonderful now. I use cotton yarn that i got from walmart. I dont even bother with cleaning and dry buring any more. I just rebuild it cause it takes less time. There are some great videos but i learned just from reading the forum here. That for some reason worked the best for me. You will get it just take your time with it.

I think my battery has a feature where if the coil has a short in it, then the battery will not operate. I have an ego twist.

Plus I always test my newly made coils on my 650 mah standard ego battery before I use with my twist.

Also what can result in a short?

Crossed legs when you put in the bottom insulator. Leads left a hair too long, so they short when you attach it to the battery. Coil touching the inside of the base cup. Several things can cause a short...

And while most regulated batteries claim to have auto shut off on sensing a short, it has to sense it first... and without an ohm checking mod, it's putting full power to the coil when it senses... The idea is to minimize the chances of the battery going off in your hands. While actual explosions are really rare, then can get really hot really fast.

Even a cheap DMM from Harbor Freight can give you a close enough reading to be safe. You really don't want that battery to fail while the topper is at your face. Hey, we just want you around long enough to join the vape club :)
