Does powering off help conserve battery?

Sorry if this has been answered, and I'm sure it has but I cannot find the thread(s) but I am curious how much battery life can be gained by powering off my VTR. I am using it frequently, basically all day every 10-15 minutes. I also searched online and don't see any answers to how or why this would help.

Keeping a mod in standby mode (on) uses very little power.
