How do we serve God? What does the bible say?
"For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother." Matthew 12:50
So what is doing God's will? First He wants us to have a relationship with Him...
“This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
He wants us to be disciples...
“If anyone would come to me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).
His word is our guide....
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105).
We have a great peace when we are in God's will. (not dependent on circumstances, those in prison for the name of Jesus have great peace)
“The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever” (Isaiah 32:17).
We should trust Him that He will carry out His plan for our lives...
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in your will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).
God's ultimate purpose for all of us is that He would be glorified ...
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. I Corinthians 10:31
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;Philippians 1:12
The following is taken from the bible bulletin board, a short synopsis of a series John MacArthur did and is one of the best explanations about knowing God's will that I've ever heard.
How does a person making decisions know what is the will of God?
The will of God is not meant to be a secret we must uncover. God wants us to understand His will far more than we want to understand it. He always makes His will clear to those who seek it with an obedient heart.
Most of the real problem areas in the question of God's will are settled for us in Scripture. The Bible reveals that it is God's will for all of us to be:
Saved (1 Timothy 2:3-4; 2 Peter 3:9)
Spirit-filled (Ephesians 5:17-18)
Sanctified (1 Thessalonians 4:3-7)
Submissive (1 Peter 2:13-15)
Suffering ( Philippians 1:29; 2 Timothy 3:12)
If all those things are true in your life, you may do whatever you want. Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart." That means that if you are conforming to God's will in all the five ways listed above, He will place in your heart desires that reflect His will. So do what you want to do!
