Dripping: What am I doing wrong?!

Right, here goes.

I've been vaping for almost a year, and feel like I've come a long way. I've gone from cig-a-likes, to eGos, to MVPs and Vamos, to RBAs, to mechs, and now, out of curiosity and hearing many people say how great they are, got me my first dripper. It's a Forge (may be a clone, I'm not sure. Got it from my local vape shop).

Doing builds isn't a problem for me — I can easily build a coil and wick. I normally do micro coils for my RBAs with some cotton, but thought I'd avoid cotton to begin with when building for my dripper, so I don't accidentally dry it out too much and burn it out. So, I've built a 0.7 / 0.8ohm 3/4 coil with some kanthal (can't remember the gauge) and used 0.2m silica for wicking.

I've included some pics of my build for reference as I think that will help you experienced drippers get an idea of what could be causing my issue, and that is I've been getting really crappy performance. I'm talking average flavour, almost no vapour and it's very unsatisfying. I'm firing it on a Nemesis on a freshly charged battery, and if I whacked my rba with a 1.8ohm micro coil build on it it'd pump out the vapor like a smoke machine and taste incredible.

I'm hoping there's something obvious here. I can assure you the air hole is right next to the coil, and even on the biggest air hole setting the performance is really bad. Right now I'm clearly not seeing the advantages of dripping, and I really, really want to!

Thanks for any help!

slap a nice micro coil on it... the coil you have built could be the problem... i use this
5KWeJgJ.jpg

and it works beautifully, and i use cotton...

twisted 30 gauge, i think it was a 1/16th bit, came in at 1 ohm, i believe it was like 8 or 10 wraps... i honestly cant remember... i built it a little over a month ago... and am still using it... might need to recoil soon...

its still hitting nicely, but not as well as it was when i first made it...

love it 1 coil for a month... just pull the cotton replace it every couple of days... i end up rebuilding multiple kanger coils for my wife almost every week or two... but no need to rebuild this... still enjoying it...

this was the original coil i built and it was about 1.5 ohms on a 1/16th bit, forget the wraps, just regular 30 gauge...

It always comes down to your coil and wick. Microcoil is a must if you are chasing flavors. Here is something simple you could use for reference:

Forgot to add: I was using 30g Kanthal wire, was shooting for 1ohm resistance which was my preference at that time. As for the cotton wicks, they are in snug, but not tight. You can easily pull it out of the coil without binding or resistance.

my recipe for great flavor and vapor:

  • coil directly behind the air hole (as close to the inside of the cap as possible without shorting out)
  • coil centered vertically and horizontally behind air hole
  • coil squared up with air hole
  • just enough wick to touch the deck (legs not too long)
  • just enough wick to contact the coil (diameter)
  • tight coils (contact coils) [some call them micros regardless of size]
  • not too much juice on the deck (too much can interfere with air flow)
  • cotton is king

1 air hole required for each wick and coil. no more, no less. (unless they're all pointed directly at each corresponding coil and providing equal air flow to each.)

your deck looks too full. (wick and juice)
your coil looks cluttered. (that lump of wick on the left in the second pic is surely directing air flow, if not blocking it)
your coil is not oriented perpendicular to the wall inner diameter closest to it resulting in inefficient air delivery/current.

i'd get one coil working first, because to run duals you have to make two identical coils - i mean dead on identical, else they draw different amounts of power.

If you decide to use cotton as a wick, make it and then halve the cotton you thought you needed. With silica - cut the tails off close to the coil ends but still able to touch the deck.

For one thing, you bought into dripping. Kayfuns, Taifuns, etc offer the the same quality of vape as a dripper with the annoyance of having to refill every few minutes.

Same diameter & resistance coil, same e-juice and cotton wicks in my RDA and Kayfun give me different vapes. I have yet to find a tank that gives me the same flavor as an RDA. The only reason why I still use my Kayfun is the convenience of not having to drip every 6-8 draws, plus, its the closet thing I found so far that offers a similar flavor intensity as an RDA.

However, the convenience of being able to instantly switch between e-juices in an RDA makes it the best option if you like rotating a variety of different flavors, and, I think the best way to experiment with different blends before you commit to filling up a tank.
