I know I've started a bunch of new threads here, but the more I vape, the more curious I am.

What is dripping?
- My understanding: You build your own coil, put cotton in it as a 'wick,' and put juice directly into the cotton.

Is it cheaper? Is it easier to change flavors? Do you change wick with each flavor? How do you get into it and start building your own stuff?

Again, forgive me for all the questions and maybe stupid sounding ones, but I really am curious - especially since I just started trying some new flavors.
I smoked Marb Menthol Lights which is why I started with the Blu Menthol in 2012 (didn't use it full time, only when I didn't want to stop studying to get my nicotine fix - mainly during exams) and Halo Kringle's Curse last November, but after using the KC full time for the last month or so, I wanted to broaden my horizons, which now has me curious! :p:vapor:

yes you build you own oil, wick it with any number of materials i use cotton, then drip the juice directly on the wick and coil. it is cheaper than buying new premade coils, but i for one go through juice faster. i dont change the wick when switching flavors but you could. yes its easier to change flavors because you dont have to wait till you finish a bunch of juice like you do with a tank. i also find the flavor from dripping is much better than from a tank, and you can get more vapor

Take a look at these two totally thrown together pictures from GIS.

We drip for better performance. I get better flavor and bigger clouds from a dripper. And it's cheaper, since a re-wick and rebuild costs pennies each time.

For me, it's better performance and it's fun.

Others don't care for it so much.

RIPtrippers, I feel, has his biases, as he likes his throat hits, warm vape, and single-coil builds. My bias is towards dual-quad coil, cool vape, super wide open airflow hits.

Now back to the OP.
Is it cheaper?
Depends. RDA's tend to be cheaper than rebuildable tanks like an Atlantis or Fogger. Working on them is also easier, since there is a larger volume within that top cap to position coils and place wick.

Is it easier to change flavors?
That's what it was meant for.

Do you change wick with each flavor?
Depends on how much cotton you have, and what juice flavour you're currently vaping. I don't usually bother to change cotton per flavor, but I find myself re-wicking my atty every 2-5 days. Takes 2 minutes, and leaves your atty tasting fresh more.

How do you get into it and start building your own stuff?
If you have a local B&M, have them show you the guts of an RDA (which isn't much, to be frank), and have them show you how they build coils and wick. If you live in the sticks and don't have a local B&M store to make a drive to one worthwhile, let me know and maybe I can make another pictorial on how to do very basic micro coils. Then it should be easier for you to make up your mind on whether or not to purchase anything and what to purchase if you do. Sites like fasttech (based in China), focalecig (based in the UK), and several others have very cheap, not very high quality, clones if you're a tinkerer like me and just like to meddle and fudge with everything.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask. We're here for that reason.

Hi everyone,

New vaper here... I just got my delivery today from Fasttech full of goodies. Amongst the goodies was a Patriot RDA, 28 guage A1 Kanthal and Muji cotton. This was my first attempt at building coils, wicking and dripping as I had been clearomizers since I started vaping. I would really appreciate any advice from experienced vapers\drippers. I built two 8 wrap coils of 28 guauge with 2mm inner diameter and it came out at about 0.59 ohms (I have Siegeli 100w with two efest 35 amp 2500 mah batteries, I should have enough amp head room) but I was kind of expecting somethig closer to the 0.50. Any thoughts on where I may have gone wrong?

Still vapes pretty well, good flavour and nice clouds albeit I had to drill out the stock air hole to 2mm and decided to add another 2mm as I could not get the lung hit I was looking for. This is my first build so any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

That's basically it. Although as others have mentioned, you can drip with just about anything; it just means that you don't have a dedicated tank to hold the liquid. You could take apart a clearomizer and drip off the chimney, if you wanted :D

It can be more expensive at first, or if you find you just consumption going through the roof. RDAs, Rebuildable Dripping Atomizers, tend to be on the cheaper side of rebuildable atomizers, if you get clones, but also more expensive than some of the cheaper clearomizers. It also has associated startup costs: Wire, wick, and tools if you don't have anything to cut wire. Certain drippers enable you to vape at really high wattages, which in turn can use up lots and lots of juice. But in general, they're very cost effective once you've got everything you need (and avoid buying all the RDAs on the market :p

I generally re-drip every half hour or every hour, so it's not a big hassle. I'm a full time dripper now, can't stand tanks anymore

I wouldn't fret over .09 ohms, that's only 18% over your target (which sounds like a lot, but it's .09 ohms). I would guess:

1) Longer leads than calculator used
2) An extra wrap thrown in on one/both coils
3) Kanthal wrapped around a 2mm bit will have a slightly larger Inner Diameter than the 2mm, especially if you're not putting a lot of tension on the wire as you wrap. This would increase the ID, thereby increasing the total length of Kanthal, thus resistance.

ETA: Oh, and I thought of a couple more, looking at Steam-Engine.org:

4) Some resistances just won't be possible, with a whole number of wraps/half wraps.
5) Weirdness involving "half-wraps" on a return coil. I used coiltoy to help me figure out exactly what a "6/7" wrap means, for example.

Thanks readeuler, really appreciate your thoughts on this. Will try with a smaller diameter wrap to see if I can get it closer to 0.5.

Looking for another RDA, one where I dont have to drill out the holes to get a decent lung hit. Been considering Mutation X V2 based on the reviews but thinking this will be a bit of an overkill with all the air holes and its an RDA for super sub ohm builds as opposed to a 0.5 build. Any suggestions?

Edit: Also thanks for the coiltoy suggestion... Never knew this existed and this will prove very useful in the future.

Do NOT build your coils counting on 35a from those batteries, they are NOT 35a continuous, theyre an LG HE2 underneath the wrapper and are 20a. They can be PULSED BRIEFLY at 35a but there's a reason LG calls it a 20a battery.. Efest likes doing that to sucker people into paying more. A real LG is a few bucks cheaper than Efests and Efest does nothing but put their purple wrapper on the batteries LG rejected..

Thanks for the heads up.... Yep.. I fell for the whole "Efest 35amp" BS...but it was too late... Now keeping between 0.5 and 0.4 on builds. I was surpised as I watched a review on them on youtube as being an alternative given the unavailability of the VTC5s. They are not in the same league when it come to continous discharge. Now on the lookout for VTC4s (Read that they are 30-amp continous) but I am even more uncertain around where I can get genuines in the UK. If anyone knows of a reputable and trusted supplier for VTC4s then please let me know.

Thanks.

Sony 18650 VTC4 2100mAh 30a

I hope they ship to UK because I've bought all my batteries from them and they're one of the best sources. I have 4 VTC4s and they all perform amazingly. They also have the Xtar 30A High Drain which is a VTC4 cell if they're out of stock on them, but they currently have VTC4s in stock :)
