A dry hit is when the coil does not have enough liquid to vaporize and the coil burns the wick. The wick burning can be cotton or silica and a host of other fabrics....Look at it this way....Light a filtered cigarette on the filter side then take a puff...That is equivalent to a dry hit.

Depending on the wick, if it is silca, it can be cleaned under running water...cotton, it needs changed. The coil itself is good, it is the wick that goes bad.

Burnt or dry hits taste TERRIBLE. You will definitely know if you get one. After you stop retching, you'll have to replace the wick, or if it's a pre built coil, the entire coil.
Side note, those "studies" that claim that vape devices can create formaldehyde were running devices set to permanently make dry hits, a condition no person would be able to do... because of the retching. When they stopped the dry hits, no formaldehyde was found at all.
A big selling point of temp control is it can prevent dry hit.

Yeah, even in a basic low end clearomizer at low power, a dry hit is nothing fun. Best description of a high powered dry hit, taking a hit off the business end of a hair dryer set to full power then add in a sharp, acrid tennis ball sized air ball hitting the back of your throat and upper chest that makes your throat instantly tighten up, *caution green at the gills* as you choke and weeze trying to catch your breath.

Top coil tanks are notorious for it if you chain vape them. Back in the heyday of the original Vivi Nova, had to learn the Vivi Twirl, take a few puffs, tilt the tank upside down and twirl it to allow the wicking to soak up juice. After that, some bottom coils have a hard time wicking thicker liquids over a 30pg/70vg and such.
