Fluval polishing pads are a favorite of some. Not sure if 'best' suits it. It is real close to polyfil without being so 'fuzzy' as to catch on the bridge and metal mesh. Imo, Blue foam is a bit better in that regard - it's as if it's singed on top forming little balls of the ends and I've never had the bridge or mesh pull the blue foam from the cartridge.
But if you use fluval, I suggest using the straw mod:
.. I use a Johnson & Johnson 'safety swab' Qtip shaft and also cut a diagonal on the top to avoid the bridge and you could cut a bit more of the fluval off the bottom too. And not packed too tight but packed down enough so as not to be grabbed by the bridge or a piece of wire from the metal mesh.
