I want to order a passthru for my 901 but I have a problem, I think. I don't have a normal desktop setup. I can't sit at a computer in a normal fashion. I have to lay propped up on my couch. I have an L shaped desk that goes around the foot of the couch. My monitor is on the end closest to me. The Tower is exactly 60" from me, in a straight line, no slack in the measuring tape at all. There is really no other options to the arrangement at this time. Everything I have is wireless so I use a lot of the USB ports.

I have been told a couple things about the passthru.
1. If you have a lot of USB ports in use then the passthru won't work well.
2. Using a USB extension cord will cause a decrease in the strength of the passthru and it won't fire up the atomizer.

Both of these things have been told to me by dealers and I just don't see them telling me that unlessit's the truth since they are in the business to sell things, not talk you out of them

Has anyone had any experience with this? Do you use an extension cord, or have you tried to use one. I really want to be able to use a passthru but it's looking like it may not happen.

Thanks in advance for any help you give!

You guys are awesome! I knew you would come thru for me! I spend literally, all my waking time right here on this old couch of mine in front of either my computer or my Xbox. Yeah, I have no life, lol It just seems silly to me to be spending so much money on batteries when a passthru would do the same thing in a more efficient way.

Again, thanks so much!!!

Jules22871,

Click here for examples of the USB power source plugs-in for home and car. They're really inexpensive.

An USB extension cable will work, just avoid the cheapy cables as the thin wires cause too much of a volt/amp drop. I use an extension cable with the power source pictured in my link when driving my van. It works great.

I have a power inverter for our explorer already but I did buy one of the converters to use here at home for when the passthru gets here. Thanks for link. That one was even less expensive than the one I found, lol

I am a software engineer and since my life is on my computer, I would absolutely never plug one of these passthroughs into a USB port on my computer 8-o

I bought a Kensington at bestbuy.com. It last approximately 2 days before needing a re-charge. It was definitely one of my better buys!

Kensington - Battery Pack with Charger for Apple® iPod® and iPhone - 33396
I was hesitant to plug one of them into my computer also. I don't use one for working but my computer is pretty much my lifeline and I really depend on it. It would break my heart if something happened to it. I got the el cheapo converter thing for now but I have plans to get the Kensington battery pack next month when I don't have as many bills to pay. Thanks bunches!

Care to elaborate on why? I can't think of any reason that a passthru could harm your computer. Even if it shorted out, your bus should catch the short and shutdown the port immediately.

I couldn't agree more. If a short develops, you could damage your computer. I have a very simple setup that allows me to charge 4 e-cig batteries and 2 cell phones all at the same time. I just got a inexpensive powered USB hub. It's not even hooked up to a computer at all. Just plug the power supply into it and you've got a multi-port USB power supply. The power supply puts out a few amps. More than enough to support a few USB ports that only require a few milliamps.

Don't get a USB hub that isn't powered. It won't work. You need one that is powered. The simple way to tell if you don't know is to look at the package and see if it has a power supply that plugs into a wall outlet. If it does, then it's a powered supply. Don't even bother hooking it up to your computer. There's no need, and your computer isn't subjected to possible damage from a defective USB passthrough.

You can of course plug your passthrough into your computer's USB port, it's your option, but I suggest you might want to ask schnauzer4me about how he felt when he fried his computer.

not sure if i am posting in the correct place .....but.........i took my usb 901 charger thingy to work & plugged it - all was good for about 1 minute - i smelled smoke and was thinking who in the heck is smoking in the office...no that is something burning in the office 8-o ...holy crap that is MY computer smoking!!! yikes:shock:...
i quickly pulled that sucker out and with all the nerve i could muster up told my boss that hmmm ...excuse me...yeah...well.... i think my e-cigarette toasted my 'puter.....(the usb plug totally overheated and crashed the whole dang computer) .....needless to say my boss was less than happy with me ....
took it to computer wiz & he said the usb charger was not compatible with my usb port...something to do with new port vs old port.... ....so just f/y/i if you have an old computer don't use the usb charger....
or crash, boom, bang, fire in the hole....
the computer was a lost cause
however my e-cig & charger survived and thankfully i am still employed ...
has anyone heard of such a thing? or just my bad luck?

I got my passthrus in today. I had already ordered and received this adapter

HDMI cables, DVI cables, HDMI wall plates and HDMI switches.

and it does not work with my passthrus at all. My son went to Office Max and bought a high end USB extension cord and I am happily vaping away! I can't believe the difference in the amount of vapor they put out! I am going to be ordering the kensington battery pack as soon as the hubby gets over what I've spent so far,lol

PS: If you need a wall outlet adapter, make sure you get one that has an output of 1200mAh At least that is what Wayne at RD told me but I had already ordered the other one and was hoping it would work. Eh, I'm sure I'll find something to use it for sooner or later.

That'll actually crank out substantially more power than a standard passthru, hooking up to your PC you're pulling 5v @ .1 amps, if you get a wall-powered USB hub they'll generally provide 5v @ .5amps. 5v @ 1.2amps *could* fry an atomizer, but you'll probably be fine.

the att will only draw the amps it needs at the voltage of the supply, if it's new and draws .8-1 amp and you plug into a supply that can deliver more it will just draw what it needs .8-1 the only way to get it to take more is to rase the voltage. don't worry about getting too much amps just too much volts.
"its not the amps or the volts that kill, its the ohms and power"

Thanks for posting that, Mamu. My 5-yo Dell laptop at least warned me that it ain't havin' none of my 901 P/T with a message that "a USB device has exceeded the power limits of the hub port."

So, out it came, to be plugged into a direct/mains powered USB hub putting out 5V -- which proceeded to fry three atomizers before I figured out that 5V is a bit of a risky range.

Seeing that the 801 and 510 P/T's have an in-line battery that limits the voltage to 3 or 4V, I've searched in vain for a 901 P/T with a battery -- and found nothing.

Does anyone know why a battery-powered USB P/T isn't made for the 901?
