Using the same wire theoretically gives it better conductivity, since the positive connection only has to essentially power 1 wire rather than 2 wires evenly.

Also, it removes the restriction of post hole size for the most part for lower gauge/twisted wires. (For example... You might not be able to squeeze 2 24g wires into your post hole, but if you only use 1 wire then you can probably fit a single strand through no problem)
