I've been rebuilding lots of different kinds of coils in the Protank 2 in hopes to breath new life into the vape quality and I think I've found the best possible vape (subjective I know) from this unit.

This has been my all day build for the last week and I think its nearly on par with some of my drippers.

The build:
34g kanthal 11 close or touching wraps on an 18g needle. This will make about a 2.4 ohm coil. X2 coils for 1.2 ohm build.
Fire the coils and compress the coils lightly with tweezers to snug them up.

Install cotton ball wick loosely through the coil. Option 1: You can do this before the coils go into the atomizer housing. Its easier to put wicks into coils before but more difficult to get them parallel and the correct height when installing them.
Option 2: Use 2 needles to support the coils on the protank head while you install the rubber grommet and pin.
This makes installing the cotton wick more difficult but not too hard with a steady hand. Anyway you will have to replace wicks in this fashion.
The cotton wicks should not be super tight inside the coils. Pull the cotton through until just as it gets snug.

I have never tasted rubber or noticed and significant burning on the rubber grommet but for those who might be worried about burning rubber, there is another trick. Just snip off the very top of the rubber grommet so it sits flush with the housing tube.

Put a super lightly rolled 2 mm flavor wick on top of the coil and trim all cotton tails flush with the widest part of the atomizer housing.

I vape 70/30 and 60pg/40vg and 50/50 with this between 3.3-4.2 volts depending on the juice.
Solid flavor that I've only ever had on an RBA and excellent TH. Its a slightly moist vape with some thick clouds.
I'm using this on my Provari but it works great on the egos as well. :vapor: Its all I'll use on the protanks now.

I would love to know if anyone thinks they have found an even better build for the protank.

Heres another that I tried but decided replacing wicks would bee too much effort each time due to the tight space. Good vape on triple coils also. IMG_5644.jpg
Happy modding!

Nicely done, but why the insistence to do this on a protank? Has got to be the smallest platform available to do builds on. There are so many great rba's out there that are truly magnificent. If you want to build get something that was designed to be rebuilt. Just saying. But hey power to the build!! Have you done a SS mesh or ceramic build on that yet.?

It's the convenience of having a tank on the go that I don't need to drip into. I've got 8 clearomizers and I just swap tanks for another flavor.
I also use rbas when I'm at home or have the time and space to drip in them. IMHO this is as close as it gets to simulating that kind of vape on a protank. I'm also in the experimentation process of finding the best setups for myself or improving on the ones I have.
It didn't take long to realize the protanks limits but it has now been rebirthed.

Nice job, I may have to try the same thing.

For the last 2 months all I'm using is the dual micro coil setup and I couldn't be happier. Well..... I wish I didnt need to rewick it so frequently to maintain that crisp awesome vape but I'll trade my 10 minutes of time for great flavor with cotton.
Definitely worth a try, I bet you wont go back to stock after.

I decided to give the 32 gauge a try I did 12 wraps around a small paper clip can out to 2.6 ohms per coil I threaded 2 strands of peaches and cream yarn thru it with a needle threader, I tried it with 2 strands as a flavor wick but it caused dry hits after 2 hits or so, took out the flavor wicks and it is better now, still need to use it for awhile to tell if it will stay wet or not.

Nice, I did notice that the flavor wick size is more important after building dual micro coils. I use just enough cotton to lightly roll a 1 mm wick and its awesome. Too much flavor wick and it will either flood or not produce flavor and vapor. Too little and I got dry hits after chain vaping awhile.
I've never used peaches and cream yarn but I never get dry hits with cotton ball material. The key is to wick it very lightly. Example, dont roll the cotton before pulling it through. That compresses it and will reduce the wicking. Pull the cotton through just until it starts to bend the coil and stop.

If you have another go at this, I'd really recommend using one of the larger needles in a pack of needles to wrap onto. They are pretty much spot on 18 ga. I was lucky enough to nail it on the first try but I've tried all sorts of gauges of wire and diameter of coils. This one still holds the candle for me.
Nice build by the way. Rock on!

On average how long do the wicks last?

And do you think it can be done with 32 gauge, thats the smallest wire I have

Of course 32 gauge will work, I would do maybe 9-10 wraps each to get around 1.4 ohms or so. I like the 34 ga more because I can lengthen the coil a bit more and have even more contact with the wick creating an even better vapor/flavor production. You would need to up the voltage to get a similar hit on larger wire but once its hot it will likely start to pull juice too quickly and lead to dry hits and possibly burnt cotton.
I get about 3 days on a wick or about 4 ml of juice before I want to change it. I notice first the flavor is not as nice as in the beginning and later on the hits seem sort of dry. When this happens, I pull out the wick and its almost always gunked up or charred. Takes me only 5 minutes to re wick and good for another 3 days.
Lately I have been building 4-6 coils in about an hours time and it lasts me about 2 weeks before I need to spend another 30 minutes wicking them again.

I've been building micros on my protank for awhile but never tried building a dual coil. I only have 30g Kanthal right now so I will have to wait until I get some 32/34.. But how do you connect the 2 microcoils - when your finished wrapping one do you just use 1 of the legs to start wrapping the 2nd coil right next to it?

Just make 2 separate coils and mount them just like you would 1, 2 wire outside the rubber and 2 wires thru the center, Easy pesy

And here I am still trying to seat one properly! (albeit vertically) My problem with all these trickier build is if something is a tad off I just put up with it because I don't want to rebuild.... again.

So for the 2 or 3 coil design, do you end up with 4 or 6 leads running through the grommet/pin assembly? That sounds tricky to do, if the positive leads are touching each other, is this ok? or negative for that matter. What are the spacing requirements if any?
