I've been building coils for years now and consider myself relatively experienced. What I'm trying to understand is how the pre-made coils are so much more durable (lasting weeks) and able to handle much higher wattage. I've noticed some are vertical and I've built those too but they still need to replaced much sooner and can't handle the higher wattage.

Which devices are you comparing?

If a coil is made with thicker wire and multiple coils inside the same coil head, it can last longer and take more power.

Just in general. Everybody I know using pre made coils gets crazy use from them when compared to built. Higher wattage without burning as well. Make me think there is some special technique I'm missing

maybe everybody you know are using the new temperature controlled mods, in which case their wicks don't get burnt.

you really have to look closer at the setups and not jump to conclusions about premade coils versus rebuildables.

many experienced vapers already have setups with rebuildables and older vw mods, but new vapers today can get the new tc mods with premade high powered coils and start off at a superior level.

I'm using tc as well and loving it but I'm specifically referring to kanthal. My sense cyclone has a pre made coil that I've cranked to150 watts. Id never be able to do that in a coil I build.

is that a chimney coil?

I'd expect those chimney type coils to run longer than regular horizontal tail coils just because of the design. It's the carto design; they should last like the cartos used to.

and for 150 watts, that's probably pretty thick wire like maybe 22 gauge I guess

I've been rebuilding/upgrading Aspire K1/Maxi and Nautilus atomizers. Aspire really packs the wick in these BVC's, much tighter than most would build (no small wonder they did not handle higher VG very well).

The older ones used Silica as wick - virtually indestructible - toss almost as much power as you want at it and the while your juice might taste bad, the wick won't get burnt or damaged. A user could vape on one of these until the coil got clogged up with 'gunk' and was lagging in vapor production.

The newer 'cotton' atomizers were hit/miss, to much power or to thick juice and your done - the only fix was toss the atomizer and screw in a new one and hope that it works better. Out of a pack of 5 sometimes only 2 had decent air flow and the other three had almost ZERO air flow right out of the box. I learned to always check the air flow before installing for any hope of 1-2 weeks of service life.
