Yeah, this is what can happen when you don't use the appropriate charger for your battery:
"E-cigarette was plugged into an iPad charger on the bar when it blew up."
In common English, use only the charger that is recommended for the battery. And use the appropriate USB/wall adaptor.
The news story didn't say what type of e-cig it was. Regardless, as stated above don't attempt to mix and match batteries, chargers, or USB/wall adaptors.
Ego charger and USB/wall adaptor
These are lithium ion or li po batteries. They are a volatile (as in flamable) chemistry should they short circuit. It is rare, but it can happen that a battery can go into thermal runaway and go into meltdown mode, releasing very hot gas and flames with force.
Statistically, most battery incidences occur while charging. Charge your batteries on a flame resistant surface. Stove top, marble countertop, baking pan or pyrex dish. Don't charge your batteries when not in the house to monitor them. Use a USB/wall adaptor, not a computer USB port or an automobile USB port.

People need to be aware that just because your USB cable plugs into something, that does not mean it is a proper charging source.
this is awful publicity, not what we vapers need for news coverage right now. atleast the comments are spot on!
what if the battery exploded because it got wet and shorted? after all that's a bar counter.... I use all my usb chargers including the Ipad's to charge all my USB devices indistinctively including Ego twist, Itazte, and dna 30 devices, never noticed the batteries getting hot, just slightly warm as its normal. Of course I exercise common sense and don't charge anything on top of flammable material, like bed tops, carpet, fabrics, paper etc, and never leave the batteries charging when I am not around.
It never ceases to amaze me that people just don't get the whole proper charger for the proper battery concept. I for one would never do something as ridiculous as trying to charge my e-cig with the wrong charger!
