Many electronic cigarettes, or E-cigs, are marketed as a healthy alternative to regular cigarettes.

But according to an NYU professor, that might not be the case.

NYU Langone professor Jonathan Whiteson, medical director of the Culinary and Pulmonary Wellness and Rehabilitation Program, said the E-cigs are harmful to users' health.

"Dangerous chemicals have been identified in the vapor, not just nicotine, and they can potentially cause lung damage," Whiteson said...

Even with the pathetically ignorant "expert" comments, this one literally made me chuckle:

CAS senior Carolyn Park said she thinks students should avoid the E-cig for other reasons besides health.

"If you want to smoke, just smoke the real thing," she said. "I understand the appeal, but it looks silly."

If these are the minds of our future, we're doomed!

Screw her. I happen to be an expert on what looks cool and that new Volcano Inferno has cool written all over it!

There are a lot of things that I think look silly or at least very unappealing. That would never prompt me to tell someone they shouldn't do it because I happen to believe that other people do not exist soley for my viewing pleasure. Likewise, I don't exist for theirs. vaping happens to look very cool in my opinion and, like I said, I'm an expert so there!:p

I commented as well:

I request that Professor Whiteson cite his sources that show that e-cigarette vapor contains "dangerous chemicals." CASAA (Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Assc) has links on its site for every known test and study and not one discovered any dangerous chemicals in the vapor.

ONE test - done by the FDA - found a non-toxic amount (approx 1%) of diethylene glycol in the liquid of ONE cartridge tested, but did not state it found any DEG in the vapor and they also did not find the chemical in the other 17 samples tested. No other testing by other labs has shown any potentially dangerous chemicals, in addition to the small amount of nicotine, in e-cigarettes to date.

Where is your evidence to support this allegation, Professor Whiteson??

And to the genius who said that e-cigarettes "look silly," so users should just smoke the real thing - what an asinine comment. So it's better to look cool than to worry about your health? Four years in higher education and this is what you have learned? Wow.

Registration is really easy and they automatically post your comment if you are registered.

I didn't register (perhaps I should have) but they're clearly witholding my comment pointing out that Mr./Dr. Whiteson's title was the first of several inaccuracies.

Am I the only one who found "medical director of the Culinary and Pulmonary Wellness and Rehabilitation Program" preposterous?

He is the director of the CARDIAC and Pulmonary Wellness and Rehabilitation Program.

Culinary?

This is interesting... seems the good doc made some ill informed statements back in 2009 and someone called him out of them. You can read the back forth discussion here My conversation with Jonathan Whiteson M.D. | Electronic Cigarette Magazine It'd be interesting to know if the author of this article spoke to Dr. Jonathan Whiteson recently or grabbed some older comments off the internet. If these were recent comments, then it's clear he has no interest in seeking the truth.

Truth?? They can't handle the Truth! They rely on sensationalism and hype to make their aurguments. Truth is of no use or need to them along with documented data. This is a tough battle since it is very hard to beat Stupid and Ingnorant with Logic and Reason

A student quoted in the article ... strange ...
CAS senior Carolyn Park said she thinks students should avoid the E-cig for other reasons besides health.

"If you want to smoke, just smoke the real thing," she said. "I understand the appeal, but it looks silly.
Sounds like a candidate for Jay Leno's 'Jaywalking' segments, or maybe a Miss USA candidate.

I was looking up a past article of Whiteson's and found this post of a few days ago on Quitnet:

The NRT inhaler is different; it has none of the carcinogenic substances they've found in e-cigs, it does not deliver nicotine to the brain within seconds like the e-cig does (to mimic the delivery of the drug to nicotine receptors in the brain like "real" cigarettes do), it is not meant to help people wean off the drug.

I think that link is broken. It didn't work for me. Try this:

The QuitNet Support Forums

Yours works fine, the other did not. Thanks for finding the correct link. Some interesting posts there, a lot of bad information about E cigs but one thing is certain. The sheeple have heard the gov and "health" organizations message, E cigs have carcinogens and aren't safe and nrt and other pharma products are good.

Was tempted to post, but it's been a long day.
