some posts show this mod using 18350 batteries and there is a gap from the telescoping tube showing. Other posts don't have this gap. So what is the smallest size this mod can be screwed into when using 18350?

There is a gap when using the 18350. The pics you've seen without a gap don't have a batt in them.

If you "modify" the center pin you can reduce or eliminate the gap. out of the box unmodified there is a gap. Mine with a modded center pin is 2 7/8 inches or 73 mm.
