I don't know whether vBulletin lets you make these sorts of fine-tuning adjustments, but I just posted a discussion in the Annex about L- and D- nicotine, and I ran smack into the character limit of 1000. Could be I misunderstand how the Annex is supposed to work, but I thought it would be good to quote the relevant parts of the posts I was referring to, to save people the trouble of loading up 4 different threads. And also to weed out some possible negatives about a forum supplier who doesn't deserve them (users might click on a link, and read only part of the thread).

I realize you gotta have limits. This one just seemed counter-productive.

Somewhere there must be a differentiation between the size of post allowable from different levels of members, in that case - although I haven't seen that in the admin options. I'll ask our vB guy.

Many posts go up there with a thousand words, two thousand maybe, so there is no universal character limit.

On the other hand you might have posted while we were working on the site, there's a lot going on in the background at the moment.

Always copy & save your post text before hitting the Post button, just in case. Normally you can get back to the visual editor, with all the text still there, by hitting the browser Back button - but it's better to play safe.
