I know this is a dumb question but just to be sure: SS and 316L are the same thing, correct?[emoji15]

As Fran said.... 316L is SS. BUT not all SS is 316L

316L is only 1 of several different grades of SS used by vapers

316L is the most common SS wire used in atomizers, but some folks like 430. There is also 304, 316, 317, 317L...

Oh wow! All of which can be used in TC?

Yes, but with different TCR settings. If your device doesn't have TCR adjustments, it's best to stick with what the device calls for (in most cases, 316L).

The TCR values for popular wires are as follows (note that thes values are what's used on joyetech/Eleaf/Wismec devices... traditional notation would read more like 0.00138 for SS430)

Wire TCR Value
Stainless Steel 304 - 105
Stainless Steel 316 - 92
Stainless Steel 316L - 92
Stainless Steel 317L - 94
Stainless Steel 430 - 138
Titanium Grade 1 - 366
Titanium Grade 2 - 352
Nickle Ni200 - 600

SS430 is preferred by many because of it's 0 Ni content (you did know SS was an alloy, right?). However, it's springy and brittle, so not the best for coils IMO.

It's preferred by people who are trying to avoid nickel. But I don't know that I'm necessarily afraid of a little nickel in my alloy. ;)We all started with Nichrome wire and some are still using it. I probably wouldn't go 100% nickel, but, on the other hand, Evolv chose it as their preferred wire for DNA 40 and I know that they did some studies wrt to its safety.

Considering that ss 316L is so much easier to work with and you don't have to bother with TCR settings, I'm going to go with ss 316L--FWIW. :D

:) - think the ones I bought 1-1½ yr ago came with v1.02... ?

Thanks, Puf. Very good info. I didn't realize that my v1.2 Presa is calibrated for ss 304. Yikes. Time to upgrade to v3. @frannie, I'll probably need help with the download--as soon as you wake up. I'll be here. :D
