Hey Beams! Have you received those coils from FT yet? I'm about to place an order (10% off through tomorrow), so I'm wondering if I should add them to the cart.

Thanks!

OK have tried them out and like them, they are nice and clean. Works well in the CLR even with TC without spacing them out. Not 1.3 ohm though that rating is higher than actual ohm. The are just below 1 ohm. I used two of them, one in a CLR and the other in a Toptank rba. The CLR read out at .94 ohm. I had to half unwrap one leg for the subtank and ended up with. .89 ohm.

Beemslider- May I ask how many wraps on these coils ? 10/9 or 9/8 ? On another note: I was building a new (from the package) CLR coil last night and like usual I disassembled it to insert a S.S. coil. After completing my task and packing up the gear, the pulled stock Kanthal coil was sitting on the table. Something told me to see if was magnetic as I figured it should be. To my amazement it was not ?? I then grabbed some Kanthal off a spool and sure enough - it's magnetic. I tested two other old coils pulled from new CLR's and they are not magnetic either. Anyone have a thought on this ?

A couple late questions: That CLR on the tester looks pretty full- have you vaped it " How it the air flow? Which bottom pin are you using ? That of a .05 or 1.0 stock coil?

The material in the original may be nichrome.

The coils have 8 wraps on them. The CLR isn't that full. the coil has plenty of space around it. There is a lot of wicking material but it is rayon so needs a bit of material. The center pin is the 1 ohm one that came with that CLR coil. It vapes fine with plenty of airflow. I have been using it most of the evening.

My guess is nichrome, which I think is non-magnetic.

[Oops - Beamslider beat me to it.]

Here's a picture of the coil in the CLR without the wick. Lots of room.

That’s about the ohms I get with 8 wraps of 28 gauge 316L on a 2.5 mm mandrel - at least when mounted in a CLR. Spaced, though. (I count wraps from the top of the coil)

I was a little surprised at your reading at first because the FT picture showed about 11 wraps.

I’d buy a box, but I’m now experimenting with 26 gauge in my CLRs.

nichrome certainly is not magnetic but these come directly from a pack of 1.0 ohm CLR's I have never owned any coil other than the 1.0 ohm black o-rings

I'm watching the game - I'll check and double check I know they are 6 wraps which is the 1.0 ohm standard. Ok- at the break I pulled another new 1.0 ohm coil from a new box- 6 wraps of about 28awg and non magnetic. I have four old pulled coils from my 1.0's and not one sticks to a very powerful magnet. Could someone please confirm this ? (not that it matters)

I'm not sure why you're assuming that CLR coils are/are supposed to be Kanthal. Plenty of premade coils are still made with NiChrome (for power mode). Or am I missing something? Watching the game myself.

Joyetech never mentions Kanthal on their website: CLR Head (Rebuildable) - Joyetech

That said, when it comes to blister pack coils, I expect NC and silica wicks unless otherwise specified.

Go Dodgers!

Well they have some in 26awg same company. 3.5 mm depth and awg wire is .4mm so ID should be 2.7 mm. They are listed as .6 ohm. at 3.8 mm wide they should fit easily.

@Beamslider - if you’ve got a magnet lying around you might stick it in your box of coils to see if any stick to the magnet.

A contractor told me a few weeks ago that when he does that with a box of Chinese-made stainless steel nails a few will often stick to the magnet. So I guess either cr**py SS or intentional padding.

Hmm... How is it going? I'm curious because I'm getting pretty comfortable with the 28 g. How do you like the 26? Should I get a spool? I could throw one into my FT cart. Talk to me. :)
26 ga works well for me, but as you know I’m doing TC only. The only reason I have 26 is because it was the closest I could find to 28 when SS316L first hit the vaping scene. I ended up buying a 65’ coil (no spool) of “Beadalon” wire that I think was meant for making jewelry (think hippie jewelry ;)). Before I got around to trying it, I picked up a UD, 30’ spool of 316L elsewhere and starting using it, so I hadn’t tried the 26 until recently.

I’ve only done a couple of CLRs with the 26 so far, but IMO to this point:

Pros
- easy enough to work with
- a bit more vapor
- a bit more flavor (but not spectacularly more)
- coils keep their shape, stay put and last a long, long time

Cons
- use a bit more eliquid
- eat a bit more power
- a bit slower ramp up
- lower resistance coils (8 wraps on 2.5 mm gets me 0.5+ ohms, and I’ve read that on some mods SS works better in TC mode if the resistance is at least .5 ohm)

My thinking is that if you are using 28 ga with less than 8 wraps - especially if you’re in VW mode - and want a little more oomph, you should probably first try adding a wrap or two before buying 26 ga.

I’m doing 6 mg nic, but if I were still at 12 mg I’d probably stick with 28 ga. Not positive tho.

Hope that helps, but keep in mind that I’m still fooling around with 26. :)

Have nichrome from source i go to for Lionel train parts .

Those of us in model train world use it to wrap over porcelain piece inside of the smoke units and its what lionel originally used because it can take the heat. It gets hot and melts the little pellets dropped down smoke stack a late 1940s technology of theirs.

Anyways i tested my magnet to it as i have a few feet of it looks to be about 32g and magnet was not attracted to it what so ever.

Have not see Puff post in while here?
