I cant say how it is as a wick because the stuff breaks apart as soon as its cut. I tried priming with some juice to wet it and hold it together which helped some, but it still frays like crazy. I was using 2mm hollow ekowool from lightning vapes. Is solid any better? Is regular silica any better in holding together? As it stands if I cut this stuff dry with scissors or wire cutters it becomes unusable to me.

Well cotton is all fuzzy fresh out of the bag, so let the Ekowool get all fuzzy.
I put the coil & Ekowool wick in my kayfun last March, and use it every day (but not all day). That wick is working as well today as it did the day I put it in there. I just rince it with hot water whenever the taste starts to get funky.

I torch mine then cut it, stick a needle through it and wrap a coil over it. No fraying at all.

Thats how I do mine also, I have even put a 2 mm rod inside of it and wrapped a coil on it. Works great that way, very little fray if anything and easy to position it with the rod or needle inside of it. Your going to have trouble using the silica that comes with these clone atty's they dont hold up well and taste pretty bad. I have a ebay seller I get mine from, and I just recently started using ready wick I like it.

I have both silica and Ekowool that does not break up like that, even before torching it. It's been so long since I bought it I can't remember where I got it from. There are definitely quality differences out there.

Yep people seem to forget that Ekowool is a brand, not a product category. Get the genuine article from a vendor listed here: Ekowool

I used to wrap my Ekowool ends in plumbers/teflon tape before cutting it. Cut in the middle of the tape, and you got a neat and tidy end for next time.

One of the reasons I got into rebuilding was to avoid inhaling silica particles..

Not sure it's something you silica/ekowool using folks have thought about but it might be worth considering the possible health implications.

I thought about it when I was using silica, as have a bunch of people over the years. There was an interesting thread on ECF a couple of years ago that convinced me that it was not an issue. It's too bad it's been so long, I don't have a link to share.

These days I worry more about rayon, hexavalent chromium from Kanthal and diacetyl in juice. There's always something

Very true! Still a much shorter list of toxins that cigarettes though.

I remember reading through some threads some time ago. Can't remember which threads specifically and I'm sufficiently convinced not to be bothered sifting through all of them again...

Keywords that will yield informative search results would be: Amorphous and silicosis.

Sloth - sorry don't remember his full name, Papasloth perhaps?
Linked to some studies and the Njoy boss also spoke about levels of Diacetyl, which calmed my nerves, for the most part.

But hexavalent chromium from Kanthal is a new one!
    Understanding this correctly then,
If we only vaporize our juice, we should be avoiding those dangerous Kanthal temps?, with the odd dry hexavalent chromium hit though :)

Anyone care to elaborate or correct me?

Thanks for the replies I'll try torching it. I got it from one of the providers listed on Ekowools website. I have used cotton and Hemp too but so far I think silica is the most flavor neutral. Any secrets to getting the T shirt taste out of cotton? 2 boils and it's still there (I use the japanese stuff). Re: the Hexavalent chromium post I thought that was something with stainless steel mesh wicks not Kanthal. Maybe it's time to call Erin Brokovich?
