I should have been less vague- I meant the pin stage of building the coil- any tips on getting that sewing or safety pin in there easier- mine kept poking through.

I just put the straitened paper clip beside the wick, never have tried putting it inside.

You could also try the straw method.

Mine is hollow 2mm and a needle just slides right through the middle. Wrap a coil and pull needle out.

Make your coil with enough diameter that you can [pull] a double piece of the silica though the coil with a piece of wire ... Then cut to desired length:
