Hi,

Apologies that this may be a controversial topic, but I think it's an important one.

I know that we all understand the impact of nicotine and have chosen, to some extent or another, to partake. As we do caffeine and alcohol too, no doubt.

However, the general consensus seems to be that, other for the nicotine and the damage to our wallets, vaping has no side effects.

I was concerned, then, when someone drew my attention to a study relating vaping to emphysema - which is the fundamental cause of COPD.

See here: Research Suggests Vaping Could Cause Emphysema | E-Cigarette Reviews and Rankings

Please could I get views on this? Is this a risk?

I appreciate it is better than smoking (everything is...) but is vaping detrimental to previous non-smokers?

Thanks,
A

quantity and content matter.

drinking .................... does not make one drunk,
but
drinking alcohol .... could make one drunk if in sufficient quantity.

as for vaping, those high wattage vapers who routinely vape over 20ml of glycerin per day......... ; it's gotta be doing something.

Your post should read "the impact of smoking". Nicotine (removed from smoking) is not as evil as people think.

As for COPD, yes you would be increasing your risk.. as suggested by one of the UKs Pro-Vaping scientists. Pro-Vaping, anti smoking, harm reduction.

Anyway... I don't agree "the general consensus seems to be that, vaping has no side effects".

Vape Ranks should be ignored, in general. Websites like this exist with one purpose - to skew the truth about products and make money by us choosing the most over-priced e-cigarettes, giving them the highest commission. Presumably, putting in the odd controversial article improves their credibility, which stands at ZERO %.

+1 to @Susan~S Nobody actually knows the answer to your question, but most of us think it's better than smoking-- we don't see it as a mere nicotine delivery system, for us it is a smoking cessation tool-- and I, for one, always recommend against it for people who aren't trying to quit.

You need a control group-never vaped or smoked.
A group who never smoked but vapes.
A group who smoked, quit now vapes.
A group who continues to smoke & vapes.

All four groups must live in the same environment.
Monitor lung/breathing capacity quarterly. As the years go on, answers would become apparent.

Anything less is political claptrap..

This guy has either a vendetta against vaping or a hero complex. He has been at the front of more than one BS study. The statement: "even an hour of exposure" is vague. Is that an hour non stop or a puff now and then? Personally I wouldn't believe that guy if he was standing on a stack of bibles, holding one in each hand and balancing one on his head.

USA. State: Inebriated.
This is the first (and only thing) I really saw on the page.

It's an advertisement. The whole page. This website solely serves to try and sell garbage/overpriced starter kits from "big name" (potentially Big Tobacco-affiliated) vapor companies.

Vaping will not *cause* emphysema if the person was not already at risk for it. Smoking often puts one at risk for it, but smoking doesn't *cause* it either -- it just allows one's natural predisposition for it to surface.

Vaping would be far less likely to do that, because it doesn't put a load of carcinogenic tar in your lungs.

If a person has never smoked and has healthy lungs, and does not go bananas with high wattage, vaping is unlikely to CAUSE any particular problem. If one's lungs are already not in the best of health, vaping is not advisable -- unless one is using it to refrain from smoking, which is FAR more harmful.

It's all relative. Which I realize is impossible for the brain-dead media to grasp.

Weeellll....the good doctor served as advisor/consultant to Leerink. Leerink in turn invests heavily in BP outfits...

Although that I'm not gonna discredit the doc's 'could cause emphysema' ... yes, it *could* .

But citing that 'formalydehyde study' that's been sunk over and over already could mean that the good doc finds whatever his financial backers want him to find ...
