The technical term is "gunk" LOL. Its what happens when a thick, dark, juice cakes up on the atty creating a burnt ashy taste. Soaking in at least 80 proof vodka should remove it especially if you can soak overnight and flush as I describe below. But, you may have to dry burn anyway. A better way to dry burn is to put the spike plate back on and either "stove pipe" meaning just put the cone back on and suck on that or insert an empty tank to do it with. Just pulling on it with no juice will dry burn it... much safer than confusing the battery as you've described. Of course don't inhale anything while doing this. Also, there's a small hole on the bottom of the atty. If you have a syring, gently insert it in that hole and push a full syringe (usually 3 mls) of alchohol thru it to flush out the ash created by dry burning.... or remove the spike plate again and flush direct on the coil with the syringe. You should see bits of ash in the bowl you have the alcohol soak in.
The eroll atty is a super good one. Its the same one used in the ego batteries and ecabs. The only solution to your problem other than trying thinning which I don't think is the answer following your later discoveries, is another juice. Any atty, including the one used in the eroll, will not handle thick, dark, juice without frequent cleaning... like everyday with some. There is no sugar in juice.. an automatic atty killer... but the flavoring itself is the problem. For instance, some vanillas are a problem and cola has lots of that in it. I DIY and have searched for a vanilla that won't gunk up atties. They are super dark just like the stuff used in baking and that's what gunks the atty. Being located in the UK, I can't suggest a vendor with strong flavors but there's a UK subforum here where someone may know some your side of the pond.
I suggest the ego c, variable voltage or not, t or ecab to go bigger. I use ego c passthroughs and love them. Many people like the Twist for its variable voltage. These are not the big bazooka type PVs.
PS: I use clear, light, juices and have never had gunk on my atties. One time I got a few specks of ash flushing but that's it. As for flavor... its not just the eroll. Any system that uses a tank or clearomizer will suffer loss of flavor. The only tank system that doesn't is the kind that uses a punched cartomizer inside the tank. Other than that, not to loose flavor, go with a cartomizer or drip directly on an atty.
