Today, I made my very first SS wick for one of my eroll attys. It was working beautifully at first, but about a tank later, even a very light draw on it seems to trigger the battery to stay on until it hits the automatic shut off.

400 mesh, rolled around a small paperclip and oxidized over a gas flame on the stove a few times.

I'm guessing that I either didn't oxidize it enough, that I have it too close to the coils, or some other thing I haven't guessed at yet...

Any one of you experts out there have some advice on what I need to do to fix it? (I've been hunting through the forums, but I must not be getting the search terms right - I'm sure someone has discussed this in the past!)

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, chefkeith. The other battery was behaving the same way. So I pulled the atty apart, cleaned it again, and put it back together - this time it seems to be fine. I'm guessing I had the new ss wick pushed down too far.

Assuming it behaves for the next couple of tanks, I'll get to experiment with more mesh - it's wicking through juice a lot faster than a standard silica/mesh wick does. But I'm thrilled that it's working!

At first I tried 3/4" 400 mesh rolled up (no paperclip) and had some leakage, so I made new wicks with 1" 400 mesh rolled up around itself and experienced less leakage. This method still produced a small tube, so I carefully used a toothpick on each end of the wick to bend the mesh and close off the tube. Again, leakage was reduced using the 1" piece.

Maybe some of the extra juice you're losing is due to leakage?

Also, I just oxidized quickly with a Bic lighter being careful not to let the mesh glow red for fear of CrVI production. I haven't experienced any shortage issues. If I do, I plan to put a very small amount of cotton between the wick and coil, and eliminate the oxidation step entirely.

I've been thinking of trying cotton or silica inside a stainless steel wick, to fill the tube, and maybe stabilize the juice flow. Has anyone experimented with this ? Is it a bad idea ?

I'm happy with the performance of the SS wicks, both 350 and 400 mesh, they seem much less likely to burn, although just one has. I pushed it too hard, chain vaped until the coil overheated ...

It is fun to experiment with different wicks in these attys. I really liked the clean taste from the cotton wicks, but they burnt too soon in the Ovale Elips, even though they work fine in the eRoll ...

I have a bunch of pre-rolled and pre-oxidized SS wicks and silica wicks from VaporKings, enough to make maybe 50 wicks if I cut them carefully, and 20 used attys to play with ...

The Joytech attys come with a silica wick in a stainless steel collar, so I'm curious to see if cotton inside SS will give that great taste and be more durable ... :D

EDIT: Rolled my first cotton/SS wick tonight. Really just unrolled the pre-rolled wick, laid in a twist of cotton, and tightened the SS around it ...

For a moment, it tasted burnt, probably just some loose strands of cotton burning off. Then it settled down, great taste and good juice flow. When I opened it up an hour later, I noticed that there was no seepage around the tank spike, so maybe the cotton filling the SS tube prevents ther juice from "dumping" through the opening ?

The open center of the SS wick seemed like something to avoid, and filling it with cotton is working out so far. I'll be convinced if it performs this well through the coming week ...:D
