Ethyl Maltol

Since I'm new, I cannot reply to some of the original posts concerning ethyl maltol. My husband and I have been DIY vapors for about one month. We LOVED it. On Sat. my husband had an "out of the blue" seizure that required an ambulance trip from the campground, 5 hours of recovery from low potassium and high sugars. We are awaiting test results for possible new onset diebetes since they think it may be diebetic ketoacidosis...or any other problem that would have caused his symtoms. The pre-symptoms fit the nicotine poisoning stuff that I read- but he had been about 8 hours without vaping just before the seizure epsiode. Anyone else have problems related to ethyl maltol that effected sugar levels? No diebetes or family history prior tp this episode. Thanks,Sheri

I had issues in the beginning of vaping with my blood sugar levels going crazy, and I've been hospitalized prior to quitting smoking for low potassium, so I think this maybe be a pre-disposition problem for some people.

I started DIY so I would know what was in my juice, but I don't believe ethyl maltol was the cause of my problems.

If he went 8 hours without vaping prior to the seizure, it probably wasn't nicotine. There are many things to consider - age, time since quitting smoking, health, autoimmune problems, etc. Smoking lowers the immune system and autoimmune issues can become unmasked/unhidden when you quit. Often the immune system will correct itself though, the longer you don't smoke.

I'm not sure if EM will affect blood sugar levels or not. I know quite a few diabetics here on the forum use it and haven't reported any problems. If he doesn't have a history of diabetes, then I would be inclined to say that EM and vaping aren't the problem, especially if he went 8 hours without vaping before his episode. I'm not a doctor, so I can't really say for sure. What did the doctors at the hospital have to say?

This had to have been extremely frightening for you and him! I hope that he recovers quickly and that this doesn't happen again!

I am a type 2 diabetic. I go to see my doctor every 6 months. One time I went to see him and was a full blown diabetic just like that.(blood sugar fasting was 187) There are lots of test that can confirm it and some very good meds to control it pretty easy. I have only been vaping for 2 weeks but I hate sweet stuff so only vape non sweet flavors and have not noticed any changes in my blood sugar so far.

Hope he gets well soon.

Hope your loved one recovers soon.

I have heard that some folks have issues with blood sugar levels while vaping, but it seems to be fairly rare.

I have a good friend that was rushed to ER because his body stopped producing insulin. He recovered, but is on insulin now and before that near death experience he didn't know he was diabetic. That was before he switched to vaping.

Me, I'm called "pre-diabetic". Basically I produce too much insulin from very little jumps in blood sugar. Vaping has helped both issues. I also am getting better potassium levels now, which had been very low even while taking, and eating, as much as I could.

So, it has helped me, but I was aware of the issues my body had before starting and have been monitoring them. I know there is EM in my juice as I also DIY. So far so good.

Hopefully things get better for your family very soon.

Thanks for all the feedback. The bloodwork was and EEG were drawn today. They/we are unsure what to think at this point. We'll see what the results let us know and I'll repost at the end of the week! Thank You

Thanks for all the help. The ER diagnosed him with increased ph level (acidosis) due to hyperventilation. I have noticed in the past couple days....he hyperventilates when he's sleeping. The potassium level was like 2.4 which they said was the likely cause of the seizure. The only new thing in our lives was our e-juice. Menthol crystals and ethyl glycol. I've got some more research so we can eliminate the "causal" ingredient and get back to vaping. Smoking again is nasty.....ha,ha Thanks again!!!

Yep, banana flavored juice does not contain potassium and the baked potato just doesn't have enough nicotine! ha,ha I'm still vaping at work and as soon as these test results are back.....he'll be vaping a modified (ie: toned down) version of where he left off. You guys are funny- thanks for the smiles this morning. In an earlier post, I said ethyl glycol but I meant ethyl maltol
Have a great day!

I think we knew what you really meant, although I'll admit that I had to do a double take. Hope he's feeling better!

That incident had to be frightening. I hope you get to the bottom of it.

If you've mentioned this to the doctor he probably already scheduled it but, in case he hasn't, I'll suggest your husband get a sleep study done. A couple years ago I did. I wound up getting a CPAP machine. It literally changed my life and it might have saved it. Sleep apnea and diabetes frequently go hand in hand.
