I'm looking for the etymology and primary elements of common flavor classes. Searching is getting me recipes with way too much information. I just want the dinner conversation version. Can someone help me fill in the blanks?

RY4: Was an early flavor from a company called Ruyan, hence the "RY." Apparently there was an RY5 too. The primary flavors of RY4 are tobacco, caramel, and vanilla. Many companies make their version of an RY4 tweaking the balance and adding complexity. An example would be Halo's Tribecca.

555: Etymology? Primary Flavors? An example would be Halo's Prime 15.

Are there any other major flavor classes I should know for dinner conversation? I'd be very happy with rtfm link responses - I just don't know where the manual is.

Hanzo.

Great link. Thanks.

Are these good?

RY4: Was an early flavor from a company called Ruyan, hence the "RY." RY 1-4 were graded on sweetness with 4 being the sweetest. The primary flavors of RY4 are moist tobacco, caramel, and vanilla. An example would be Halo's Tribecca.

555: State Express 555 is an old British brand of cigarette still popular in Asia. The primary flavors in 555 eliquid are Turkish dry tobacco, with hints of vanilla, and nut (peanut, hazel, etc). An example would be Halo's Prime 15.

I'm a lover of RY4s. TFA's RY4-Double flavor is fan-freaking-tastic anywhere from 8-15%. I've DIY'd at least a dozen recipes using RY4-Double and every single one has been great.

My current favotite:
10% TFA Tobacco Absolute (TFA Tobacco Absolute Pure diluted in PG at 2 drops per 5mL)
5% TFA RY4-Double
1 drop per 3mL TFA Acetyl Pyrazine

This is the most tobaccco-forward RY4 recipe I've done. I can't stop vaping it.

I don't have much experience with 555. I've got some in my flavor collection, but just haven't had time to start experimenting with it yet.

I am trying to understand a little background and description of RY4 and 555. Are my descriptions any good?

It looks like Janty was a major player in the development of RY4 based on this video from Rpad.tv (beginning at 2:40).

Updated description for RY4:
RY4: Developed by Ruyan and Janty in 2009. The RY numbers were different mixtures graded on sweetness. The primary flavors of RY4 are moist tobacco, caramel, and vanilla. An example would be Halo's Tribecca and RY4 Roundup.

Many people here would confirm that Don at Backwooods Brew made a version that was hands down the best you could buy. One of his ingredients was very hard to get and in small quantities. Once a month or so he would announce to his members it would go on sale at a specific time. It sold out everytime in a matter of minutes. For reasons I am not aware of, he had such a hard time making it he finally quit. This is just some history if that is what you are looking for.

RY4 is caramel, vanilla, and tobacco. 555 is something I'm not so sure about, although I would venture to guess unsalted peanuts are one of the attempted ingredients, or hazelnut. Seems like a relatively sweet, although not as sweet as RY4, tobacco with a nuttiness as the major component.

Edit - And just for the record, when I did smoke, I never really got any flavor profiles from any cig or company whatsoever. Some were more harsh than others but that was the extent of my taste experiece because the damn thing that I was tasting was on fire. I think alot of these ecig-based tobacco flavors are trying to imitate the way tobacco smells rather than how tastes when its being burned. Perhaps 555's tobacco base is a bit further along the curing process than RY4's, giving it a bit less sweetness. But then again I'm just shooting into the dark.
