This episode points out the importance of keeping a multimeter around. When batterys or attys start acting weird, they get tested before anything is plugged into anything else. It helps to prevent cascading failures like this. A multimeter can be had for ~$15-20.

Being an ex-Electronic technician, you would have thought I would have done this, huh? :p

Wow, that stinks.

If you were close to me I'd offer to try to meet after work to get ya some batteries to get ya by.

A "trick" I've used to get batts back to working. Tape down the button, without anything screwed in, and wait until the light stays off. It can take a few days... Then charging it. Can't say I'd want to risk that with the issue you're having though.

I think you are on the right course by pitching the charger. I'd take it apart, but I'm like that, cannot stand to not know why something failed.

Wish I was coming out to CO today. I haven't been there since I was 16 (36 years ago!).
Yes! on the voltage question. I use a 5V GLV 2 most of the time. Hits like a ton-o-bricks. No real comparison to an eGo type device. I've tried all the different attys on the 3.7 volt devices and all the different batteries in my mods and none of that is as satisfying to me as my GLV.
Stay tuned though, I just ordered an adjustable voltage Buzz for my birthday so I may have something new to rant and rave about soon.
I'm also making a fancy wooden bottom feed 5 volt juicer mod with celtic knot inlays on the sides. It should be pretty.

I'm not familiar with any of those, but I may look into the GLV... Where does the GLV come from?

I have had a ego go bad and I took the cartomizer off the bad battery and put it on another ego - and had that ego die immediately also - but to have 4 killing each other -that is horrible.

I does seem shorts are contagious. I always throw out the atty with a bad battery now instead of trying it on anything else - but until I saw your post - I never considered watching out for the chargers also.

Yeah... Apparently the shorted bats short the chargers as well, which in turn shorts more bats. A fantastic cascading effect. Maybe it's a sign...

I am sorry for your loss! I have 3 batteries and now I'm thinking maybe I should get a couple more and a spare charger. Maybe someone will have a good Black Friday Sale.

The batteries that are bad you might see if anyone wants them for modding instead of throwing them away. I'm sure someone would pay the shipping on them.

I hope your order gets in soon, the folks at Cignot are top notch.

I know that - the problem is that multimeters I have seen seem so complicated - and I read the text about them and part of the problem is they can test all sorts of different things that trying to figure out how just to test pv and attys seems almost imposable for someone who knows nothing about electricity.

If anyone know a simple one made for attys and pv and gives simple easy to understand reading and comes with clear instructions someone who knows nothing about electricity can understand - please tell me.

Hey antisheep do the batts smell like fried circuit board?? I have posted about this issue a few times. Check the connection on the charger that killed the batts. Look for ANYTHING in the o-ring space (the space between the inner cylinder and outer ring were your batt makes electrical contact). I had a conector with a piece of solder flash in it and charged my batt a few times --- no problem. Then when I seated the batt a little harder the pressure was enough to have that solder make contact between the two rings. Bam instant death to the curcuit board on the eGo batt.

This may or may not work, but worth a try. Try pushing the button about 15 times in a row and then see if it works, the other thing is are you keeping your threads dry, as well as the threads on the chargers? This will fry batteries as well. If the button thing does not work, then hold the button in about one minute straight and see if that works.

All the bats smell only like juice, but I did notice that prior to the incident, the battery (RIVA) was running ultra hot... Perhaps I was vaping too much in the car. My alternate Ego bat, that had been sitting on a shelf, and not used in months, was showing signs of something... dark, around the outside, a white powdery substance, but obviously, as this was not being used, it was not the source of the problem.

You ski? I'm going this weekend (avid skier - I use the 2010 Volkl Bridges - back country / bowls / etc). NY is an odd place to be skiing, no?

I will give the button thing a try.

Cignot is the best... Yeah, I'll give the dead batteries to whoever wants to pay for shipping...

I'm just about 30 miles north of Atlanta Ga, any help?, (Lake Lanier).
Wrong coast, but thanks... I'm CO.

I had one eGo battery go bad. I plugged it into the charger and it wasn't doing anything. As I kept looking at it, it started smoking! Got rid of it fast. I put another battery in the charger and the light stayed green till I loosened up the battery a bit. I kept that charger till I received a replacement and then threw it away. Now I've ordered 2 extra chargers to have as backup.

I may have gone over the top, but I got two Ego pass throughs, two chargers, and two extra bats... Serious "backupage"...

With the $11B you've saved by vaping, I'm sure you can afford all those backups. :D Actually I have 6 eGo batteries and plan on getting more.

Hence the name. I live close to Saratoga so Killington and most large Eastern resorts are within 2 hrs drive. Travel the world for work so often my boots accompany me on the plane and I will hit a place for a day or two. Skiing on 2009 Volkl Tigersharks. Avatar is a shot of T50's just before hucking into Corbets at Jackson. Bring on the snow and happy turns to you. BTW where are you making turns this weekend??? My favorite in Colorado is by far A-Basin.

Good luck with the batts and keep them in plastic if the Pow is balls deep!

I am making turns at Copper Mountain this weekend... Next weekend will be Winter Park. I don't think we'll be seeing much Mary Jane yet as they haven't opened the entire mountain as of yet. I have to ski 4x between now and December 4th as my dad got a season pass and received 4 free tickets he wants me to use up.

This year I purchased a 4 pass to Winter Park and a 4 pass to Copper. We ski pretty much everywhere, and I like A-Basin as well... It's best for late season skiing, though. During regular season, it really depends on the conditions. The fresh pow is what we're all after, so whoever has it, wins ;) I'm fond of Vail personally, but maybe not so much the people that ski there. Too expensive as well, but that's the way everything is now days. $89-$120 for a day pass, unless you get a really good deal.

I personally try to either go for the season passes or 4 passes before the season starts. Use them once or twice and you already have your money back (of course, you have to use them a lot more than that ;).

As an update, the last battery still charged with the last charger, so I have one unit still in inventory which should hold me until my shipment arrives.

Do you folks think this scenario is more likely to happen with the stronger batteries? One thing malfunctioning and wiping out everything?

Lori

I don't think the strength of the batteries would matter much. A short in any battery can wipe out the electronics in the charger, which if by some stroke of bad luck happens to short as well, can continue taking out your remaining batteries you plug in.

Where the strength of the batteries would come in is the reaction to the short of the battery. Stronger the battery, the bigger the explosion, right? But the batteries we use have protection circuitry to protect against that.

Update: The girls over at CigNot really hooked me up! The package came yesterday, and I was on my way to vaping again. I was concerned at first, because the signature was not waved (and I am at work during the day), but the post office was able to find the package and get it to me!

The Ego pass-throughs are pretty cool, and really convenient!
