Evod coil issue

Hey all! I posted on here a few time to people looking to re-coil kanger tanks, and it seems my way doesnt work anymore? I usually use 30ga kanthal and 2mm wick, then i double over the wick to 4mm and 5 or 6 wrap it and presto, a good atty head again!

Ok so we've burned through all the ones i built a while back, and i was sitting down today to build all the old ones again when i tried one and it tastes really bad....i mean you cant even taste the juice really...normally i run these on a vamo v2 or svd at 9 or 10 watts, and when i tried these it was like 7.5 so i know heat isnt the issue...i dont get it because this is the same wire and wick i've always used...am i missing something?!?! help pls! :)

PS: It's not so much a burnt taste (i think...) its hard to describe...it's just a funky gross taste..

Could be a short somewhere. Did you check the Evod head for any burnt marks on the rubber, especially the one at the bottom? Did you try it on multiple Evod heads, or just this one?

i tried like 4 or so, wrapping each a different way, and can not find any shorts...the wick was inside a very very small bag, and the wire was new...i always rub the wire section i clip off the roll with rubbing alchohol, so it's clean. I would know if the taste was burnt rubber, and i dry fire them with the top nipple off when they are new so i can see any hot spots...and so far it starts to warm up in the middle first and works its way out, which is perfect...i'm confused haha...any and all ideas welcome!

PS: the resistance thing is a 2 part reasoning, 1:i like to use around 2.5-2.6 on mods for battery life and 2:The wife only uses Ego-C's and Evods 90% of the time so i keep our coils separate :) ....either way, every coil i built today tastes like crap regarless of resistance.

I'm not sure I understand this statement:

What do you mean by "when I tried these it was like 7.5?" What did you do? Are you running VW or VV? If VW, did you change the wattage to 7.5? And what was the result?

You should pass the wire through the flame of a lighter until it glows Red. This removes impurities and Makes the wire hole shape easier. Also a good Idea to Let the wicks soak a while on first fill.
Twisted silica takes longer to soak up liquid that Kangers Loose strand design.
Have you changed Juice Blends?

I meant Normally i run them at 9 or 10 watts, and i started that one at 7.5 watts and it still tasted crappy.

2 things...i usually fire the coil before hand untill it's red to check that it glows in the middle first without hot spots, and before i instal the head i pop the top nipple off and throw a drop o juice in there to prime the wick...is this the same thing? or should i be heating it first and then doing all that? I dont understand...i built 21 coils that were great...and today i built 4 that sucked...

I dont have an evod but this might apply. When I got my MT3S I was told I should use 2.5mm wick. I use 3 and it's fine. Is it possible that 4mm of wick is too much and the wicks aren't wet enough (I can think of a few possibilities of why the same wick would be different now)? One way to tell I would guess would be prime it with 2 drops straight on the coil. I just read that MT3 a few draws without pushing the fire button sometimes helps.

How about this? Someone snuck some of your juice and replaced the lost content in the bottle with junk stuff and you're vaping it. It's the juice, not the coils.

Or, you got something on the wick/coils that isn't washing out and you have to vape it away.

Or your kanthal wire is new and crapy from Joe-Shmo on e-bay.

Or you purchased some VG from the store and didn't notice that it smelled like ....fragrance...because the manufacturer changed the hand lotion ingredients.

Or.....you forgot to clean the posts/connections/whatevers on the tank side too.

Or.....you're the first mouse today.

(just trying to get you to think outside the box because you've tried the obvious stuff)

Yeah, that would drive me nuts too, lol.

The first time I made my own coil it had a strange taste for about the first half tank but went away. I wish I knew what I did different that time compared to the other times since I never experienced it again. The are so many minor nuances that are easy to overlook when doing it and from what you say, I would think you are doing something different without knowing it.

Unless the new coil isn't Kanthal A1? I hear the other frequently used type has a strange taste.

the tank, head, small pieces, wick, wire i'm using was soaked in alchohol and cleaned thoroughly prior to all this, the juice i'm using is a flavor that only i use and this bottle was purchased locally and havent any any issues with it at all, in fact my main preference is carto tanks (never have this problem) and i have this flavor loaded in a carto as well with no issues...I tried to vape it out, i walked around with my DBOX puritank on a vamo and another one in an EVOD on an Ego-C passthrough for about 3.5 hours at the fair and it has shown no signs of improvement :(

It's for sure Kanthal A1, I buy it in bulk from a local retail (at cost, WIN!) and it's all sealed and labeled when i get it..

Maybe we'll go this route, Where is the absolute best place online to buy Kanthal A1 and silica wick...I can get that stuff and do a few to compare taste, or maybe I can hit the retailer on the other side of town and grab 5 ft of wick and 5 ft of wire...I dont know, but if I dont produce a usable coil for the wife i'ma be in trouble! lol...I just re-wicked one of her Evod heads using the existing coil from last time and it tastes perfect, so maybe I have a wire issue here, which is wierd because this is the same wire i used last time, and the wick is new..

P.S.
How is it that it didn't taste bad on the earlier ones (new wire?)

IDK about absolute best prices so I'll bow out. Good luck!

P.P.S.
Wait! I just re-read the last sentence. IDK how changing the coil helped. Still could be bad coil, but...wow.
It's the mouse thing. Or the wick thing.

yeah i always pull the top nipple off and put a drop on the coil and one on each end of the wick before i install it and take a puff...so its not a dry fire situation, all kanger coils are wound on a 2mm wick with 2x 1mm wicks on top so that equals out to 4mm of wick anyway...this is gunna bug me till i figure it out :(

A 2mm wick topped by two 1mm wicks does not have nearly as much cross sectional area as two 2mm wicks. You got way too much wick in there.

(NB: Four 1mm wicks have less cross sectional area than a single 2mm wick)
