I went to clean and dry burn my new Evod coil. When I dry burned it, it fired fine, but after I scraped off the gunk from the coil, all of a sudden it wouldn't fire. I removed the coil from the MVP (v1), put it back on, and when I fired it, I got a short. How could this be, other than the head being a clone?:(

Unless you're rebuilding the coils, there really isn't a reason to touch the coil it's self.
Dry burning will remove the "gunk". Normally a rinse 1st with your favored way to do so.. (hot water is mine), a good dry burn to dry the wick and get the coils glowing to remove the "gunk" (pulsing the pv on and off until the coil starts glowing, and continued until you get the coil to an even glow) and a final rinse and let them dry is the basic part of coil maintenance.
If you're going to "touch" the coils, it would be with something like a toothpick to help fix hotspots (coils touching and getting way too hot in those spots).

"Scraping" is more than likely going to A- crush the coils B- cause hotspots C-pull a coil leg into a position that can causes shorts.

Pull the chimney off the EVOD coil, remove the flavor wicks...you should see the coils with the silica wick there, if they are close to the sides, get a push pin and gently nudge them away from the metal side, (I would then put a cotton flavor wick but that is just me), replace wick, replace chimney, Vape Yo Face Off! :D

They are built just like the protank...

See the upper right image...see how close the coils/wire are to the side..they should be more centered and be far away from the metal...if it short...kapoof...burned up coil
Sometimes they have REAAAALY bad runs from the factory...learning to rebuild them yourself is ALOT cheaper and you can then dial in the resistance you want...and you don't have the above close to the side ready to short coil wraps

This is how it should look (not my image..just found it with Google images)

In fact the guy has a pictorial walkthru on the entire rebuild of a protank/EVOD coil!

Another Kanger head just shorted out on me when I tried to clean and dry burn it. No, I did not touch the coils this time; it just blew. How can that be?

Maybe you are being too aggressive. The coils will burn out if they get too hot. It's best to dry burn in stages, like
(1) Hold the button for 3 seconds and quit, wait several seconds to let them cool. Blowing on them gently helps to cool them and also blows off the ash.
(2) Repeat step 1 until the coils all glow red.

Best not to get them glowing all in one step. Trying to burn off the gunk all at one time overheats the wires, and they can pop. Even so, things happen sometimes...

I found out what happened. I got hosed. I ended up spending 10 bucks for a freaking MT3--no wonder the coils popped when I turned up the voltage on my MVP to 5.0 to dry burn them; I lowered it to 4.0 and it dry burned fine.

I found the problem. My clearo is not an Evod--it's an MT3! I guess I was mixed up.

Does it have replaceable coils? if so, it's an MT3S. And while the older evod coils are not a perfect fit, they may work fine. Made by the same company also. Kanger
