I twist wire off on head for a close break too. Still running strong on my 1st protank head 2 1/2 weeks course 3-4 dry burns n flav wick change it was sure looking nasty! Still down for natural wick try n i've seen factory built heads come 3 n 3 might try a 2 n 2 like that. i have 33 g a-1 n i've found i prefer my heads under 3 ohm 3 wraps gives me around 2 seems the higher ohm n higher volts runs my juice n batteries quicker w no more satisfying of a vape atleast in my vivi n ce5's. Might just be in my head? nice clear pics! have a good one.

Boiler just use a 4/40 screw and follow the treads of the screw

I have some cotton yarn (Peaches and Cream I've seen recommended) but it wasn't ready yet so I cannibalized some silica from a spare Nova head. It was difficult to make a decent coil wrapping around a limp piece of silica.

I'm also using 100% Vg and my cotton is boiled out now and ready to go when this coil goes.

I guess I assumed people knew how to rebuild traditional heads already. This is done using 1mm silica wick and 32g Kanthal. Fold once place parallel along the paperclip giving you two lengths running through the coil. Wrap 6 times. 3 space 3, place in atomizer head. Finish leg connections on the bottom. Remove paperclip. Trim wick. Place two lengths of 1mm silica on top of coil for flavor wicks. It's best to WET the silica prior to trimming.

Hey EddieAdams

First off some major thanks for the great pictures and descriptions. Just getting started making my own coils and it helped immensely.

Now I have a question.
I normally prefer durability, so SS and silica are likely to be my preferred wick materials. My question is what kind of performance/durability or general positive things could be achieved by combining the 2 in the same wick?

My first reason is for RBA's that need the wick to bend some which I expect would be difficult with SS alone.

The other reason is that where the coil wraps around a silica wick seems to be where most of the damage/wear happens.

So is wrapping a small piece of SS around the coil area of a silica wick even close to as good an idea as it sounds in my head, or have I been vaping some strange juice?

Thanks in advance

What type of atomizer? Would help with the suggestion..

If you did an EVOD or ProTank with a ss wick you would still want to add flavor wicks above the coil. Silica would be a good choice. Gennys are good with a solid( no center tube hole) ss mesh wick 400 though, thicker liquids you might want a 330 mesh. Some people do a cheese cloth wrap but,I don't think it's necessary...

I've tried a"tube" ss wick in a genny with a silica core , didn't make a huge difference.

Currently using a Kranger Protank and Vision Eternity (using tank configuration). The ET was an upgrade to my eGo-T setups I've been using almost 2 years (quit stinkies with them) and the Protank was for a Vamo (my first MOD), like the glass tank and bottom coil combo.

I also have a SMOKTech (octopus) & IGOL-S (the small version) for flavor testing and learning to make coils and wicks.

Depending on what I can learn here and test with what I have I may consider getting another RBA as soon as my wallet recovers from this last round of goodies.

I did an EVOD head with ss once. Maybe I'll try again. Was pretty good.
Roll your 3/4" wide 400ss mesh into Solid tube the diameter of the base of the wick opening on the ProTank head. Should fit snugly.
Oxidize ss wick, torching red hot, then dipping immediately in water. 3 times at least.
Heat wire to be used with torch. Wrap 32g Kanthal 6 times around ss wick. Place in atomizer head.
Assemble the legs
Torch silica to be used. Place at least 3mm WORTH of silica on top of coil. Maybe a little more. Replace center post.
Trim both wicks to about halfway between wick opening and outer edge. Twist off excess wire by grabbing tightly and doing small circles. Gets it closer than you can with scissors.
Check ohms
If good then try it out...

Nice instructions, thanks

Will give it a try whenever the first factory coil finally goes kaput, 2 1/2 weeks and still going strong for now.

Did take me a bit to get in the habit of washing out the tank and wick every fill-up (once a day for me). Had been spoiled by my old rig, just keep refilling the tank as needed and change the atty once every 3 weeks or so.

325 not 330 for thicker liquids
