Yeah, it's a simple extraction but I'd never extracted anything before and it turned out pretty well :)

I have some 80%VG/20% DW I keep around so I don't have to thin VG all the time. Filled a 30ml glass bottle 2/3 of the way up with a pretty good French roast I had, topped it off with the VG mix and stuck it in the microwave for ten seconds (I watched it closely - more than ten seconds and I'd have had a mess) then let it sit for maybe fifteen minutes. The coffee grounds absorbed all the VG.

After that I boiled a pot of water, topped off the 30ml bottle with more of the VG mix, took the pot of water off the stove and set the open bottle neck-deep in hot water and let it steep for another half hour then strained the result through a coffee filter into a graduated flask, which actually took quite awhile and I ended up with 15ml of VG-based coffee extract.

Got a dropper and dripped a drop or two onto a 510 atty and it did indeed taste like coffee - so I whipped up a test batch of coffee/bavarian cream/chocolate/caramel that turned out to be a pretty tasty vape after juggling ratios a little bit.

So - I've got 15ml of a pretty good coffee extract and a way to reproduce it fairly consistently. Like I said it's a pretty simple extraction but I was pretty proud of myself ;)

That sounds great! I got some PG/VG last night and I am looking to do extractions with zero nic. I have vanilla beans and a good autumn spice coffee that I want to try. I do have a few concerns. One of them being are there other chemicals produced during the extraction other then the flavor oils (or whatever they are called)? I am not to concerned about the caffeine b/c I have seen other products that are effectively caffeine inhalers, but what about anything else that might be present in coffee? I would imagine that its just like anything else we vape in that regard though.

Also, I used to do cold brew coffee. (take it in and out of the freezer daily, let it thaw out and put it back in) It takes considerably longer in water then hot brew, (3 or 4 days to get a good flavor) so maybe like 2 weeks + for pg/vg but the flavor is well worth it IMHO. Now you have my ideas flowing :)

I was wondering how that turned out and I have to say Congratulations and I'm going to try it because I haven't been able to find a good coffee that I like! EDIT TO ADD: What ratio did you decide on?

Thanks for letting us know... *notes for task to complete extract coffee!

What ratio did you decide on?

I started at 3% and ended at 5% but I'll explore this a little more when I have more time. Our local coffee house has a coffee/steamed milk/chocolate/caramel thing called a Teddy Bear that my wife likes pretty well so I figured I'd try that - the rough mix (which worked pretty well) was

    5% homemade coffee extract
    5% Bavarian cream
    3% chocolate
    2% caramel

All but the coffee were Lorann flavors. Might be a couple days before you can do the Bavarian cream thing, though ;)

I think the strength of the homemade coffee extract can be pretty wildly variable but I got lucky on the first try - your extract may be stronger or weaker and you may like more or less coffee in your mix, but I think starting at 3% and working up is pretty safe.

I don't know the answer to this but I'm thinking probably not since I don't think anything got hot enough to alter the chemical composition of either the VG or the coffee oils. I could be wrong, but I think the extract is probably pretty clean.

Great experiment - thanks for sharing. I must try something like that. It would have to be several thousand times safer than cigarettes. Sounds great, something that anyone could try with very little invested.

I'll definitely have to try it! Like you said it will be a few day because I have to wait for Bavarian Cream! LOL  What an experience THAT WAS!

I'd have to leave out the chocolate, or maybe substitute in white chocolate? I don't really like chocolate in food so I'm sure I don't want it in a vape.

Keep us posted if you change anything. Thanks!

If you do leave out the chocolate you might want to bump up the caramel a percent or two. Totally your call, though ;)

I may have to try this to get a good espresso flavor. Thanks for posting this.

You're welcome - it seems to work well but was beginner's luck. I don't know why someone couldn't extract to PG instead, but I don't use the stuff any more - all my DIY is VG these days except for whatever PG is in the storebought flavorings. I may have a bit of a sensitivity to PG as I find I breathe better without it and the straight VG juices definitely don't dehydrate me the way a PG-based juice does.

But - VG does mute flavors a bit and there's no reason I can see that someone couldn't extract to PG instead if they wanted to.

Thanks for this! Have you tried extracting the coffee by steeping in PG overnight? I have found this gives the extract a purer flavour. I tried something similar to this with cocoa powder and also black pepper:) which also worked quite well - PG seems the best solvent for getting flavour out.

I would, but no longer keep any PG here - that'd be easy to fix, though.

    Thanks for the suggestion ;)
