If I recall, Zapolla is an Italian pastry thing like a fried cheese puff or something like that.

You're right on the Italian dessert. It's also an Egyptian one. In egypt, it is fried dough in the shape of balls and drowned in honey like syrup or sprinkled with sugar powder or even topped with Nutella chocolate.

So, I guess fried dough is the basic taste I would expect from the flavor, and then the enhancers are per choice. Never tried it though,, just sharing thoughts :)
