The airline that was carrying a family of smokers who caused a Halifax flight to be diverted to Bermuda this weekend says it was a costly incident for everyone involved.

A Sunwing flight travelling from Halifax to the Dominican Republic on Friday night had to make an emergency landing after passengers were found smoking in the plane's bathroom.

According to the Bermuda Police Service another passenger alerted the crew and the smokers became verbally abusive.

You've got to be kidding! Talk about an over-reaction!

Cigarettes, bombs, . . . Close enough! Death sentence to them all! My God, the smell of cigarette smoke may have irritated someone's sensibilities! Surely that justifies the airlines reaction, right? Not!

The other day at work, the restrooms were unavailable for about half an hour. When I finally got in there, they were searching each stall carefully. They were searching for ash! Someone had smelled cigarette smoke in the restroom. OMFG! You'ld think they had found a bomb or something.

What a strange world we live in.

Richmond, Va...Right in Altria's back yard.
It probably didnt even faze the lush sitting three rows ahead getting sloshed in first class, the fat lady so engrossed in her sandwich she tuned out everything else or the golfer that was daydreaming about the escort he was going to cheat on his wife with in Bermuda. Sheesh you'd think they were terrorists or something!

" Alright everybody! calm down!" ...man grabs a flight attendant from behind......."If you do not crash this plane into the air force base IM GOING TO KILL THIS WOMAN BY BLOWING SMOKE IN HER FACE!"

Bunch of ......!

That's the part that is puzzling to me. Why? So what? Like there aren't other smokers on the flight with cigs in their pockets or purses?

That's what I was thinking. Since when can you not carry cigarettes on an aircraft? They took it a bit far, unless those cigarettes had a little something extra in them.

I find it humourous that some find it absurd that the airline reacted this way but don't chastise these idiot people

Those people were rude and stupid, no doubt, but this is nuts :

"We sent a mechanic down to Bermuda, because we wanted our own people to check the aircraft," McWilliams said. Then "the people who were arrested refused to say if they had left other cigarettes on the aircraft, if they had hidden cigarettes on the aircraft. They were very uncooperative. So in addition to the technical things that had to be done, we had to search the aircraft thoroughly." He said the plane had to be searched the same way they would search for contraband items.

NUTS.

What was an over reaction? SOP of an airline is to land if a felony has taken place. Smoking on a plane is a felony.

I hate when people treat smokers like criminals... I wonder if they treat SUV owners the same way...
